Check out "The Cowboy Code"...

... of Gene Autry. Having read in another post Wicked GTR's assessment of Gene Autry as an influential guitarist, I read a bit more about his timeline on Wikipedia and came up with this:

The Cowboy Code
Gene Autry created the Cowboy Code or Cowboy Commandments in response to his young radio listeners aspiring to be just like Gene.

The Cowboy must never shoot first, hit a smaller man, or take unfair advantage.
He must never go back on his word, or a trust confided in him.
He must always tell the truth.
He must be gentle with children, the elderly, and animals.
He must not advocate or possess racially or religiously intolerant ideas.
He must help people in distress.
He must be a good worker.
He must keep himself clean in thought, speech, action, and personal habits.
He must respect women, parents, and his nation's laws.
The Cowboy is a patriot.

It's a shame his Cowboy Code hasn't been as influential over the last 100 years as his involvement with the guitar was.

I just heard this the other day on Bob Dylan's XM radio show. In your best Dylan voice, picture him saying "I am very proud to say that I live my life by that cowboy code."

Hopalong Cassidy pumped the same vibe. at the end of all his shows, he'd give the kids a little morality lesson. ironically, half the kids of that generation grew up to be raving hippies!

I've had that on the wall of every office I've ever worked in and on the wall of every classroom I taught in since I got out of college.

That first one is a steep one and one that requires tremendous internal courage and strength.
