Welcome to the TDPRI!
Shnook made a great point. The first bit that you're playing is all about learning. This goes from mental stuff like learning what chord is what to the physical aspects of playing, like developing fret hand strength and pick hand rhythm, and even just being comfortable with a guitar on. After that, you chuck it all and do whatever you want

Female guitar players rock, and are instantly a commodity. I used to do gigs witha friend of mine who sounded a whole lot like jewel. because she played guitar, it freed me to play pedal steel, lead guitar and harmonica and it really opened up the sound.

Welcome aboard!
Now where's my buddy Mandie? She's around here somewhere's... How about Outlaw Steph? Any input? We actually have several lady pickers about here on the site, stick around, and you'll get to know 'em! My daughter is three, and already refers to my guitars as "my guitars daddy!" Unfortunately she can't type yet. But powers willing, she'll be kicking my butt by her twelfth birthday. Somebody has to support me when I get too old to hit the stage under my own power...

Steph and Mandy are my bellwethers of female consciousness on the TDPRI -- if i'm posting in response to anything that might be construed as sexist, i think, how would they perceive it? IMHO, we need more female input on the board to keep us guys honest! no slag intended, but you know what i mean.

No, but once in the late 90's thanks to the evils of Absinthe, I was playing on stage dressed in a taffeta ballgown and 5 inch heels.
Graceful, I was not.

Hi m5. Keep up your practice and stick with it! That's my two cents because I wish I did when I was a teenager. I think it takes 10 years to learn guitar. That goes for guys or gals. But play with others as soon as you're able to play through entire songs... not just the solos. Don't buy into some of the fads such as the idea that you're cooler or "one of the guys" if you play on heavier strings. Many classic Tele pickers players use 9s even lighter.. nothing heavier than 10s should be used even for rock.
I play a lot of bluegrass these days, where there's almost no precedent, historically, for female pickers. There were some girl singers and and bass players in bluegrass bands.. so it's like creating a role for myself that didn't exist before. I think there will be a lot of female acoustic pickers in the future.. just as there are many female Tele pickers now. We're fewer in numbers but get all these handsome and talented fellows to ourselves. |

YaaaaaY for the birds...not English but I like that better than chicks. We have a female singer guitartis in our trio and it's the bomb. She's fairly limited as a player but is constantly learning. she sings great and having that extra ooomph in the rythm section is soooo nice. welcome ladies
Cheers ce24

Welcome to the board, m5. I'm not a girl, but I like 'em a lot! My wife's one, but she's not a guitar player. My oldest daughter is a bass player, if that counts, but she dosen't post here. |

Thicker strings do have an impact on tone. I don't think they are *required* but I've moved up string gauges over the years and definitely prefer heavier gauge strings.

I'm sure there are more gals on the site than we're aware of. I know quite a few women out in the real world who keep their gender a secret when they go on web forums, since they feel that many male posters treat them differently if they know, and not always for the better.
