seriously, the way this guy played up to the camera really put me off. Playing aside, I just get the creeps when I think about him.

The Vandals wrote a song about him:

The city council met last night the vote was one to six
Denying access to our town by TV's "G.E. Smith"
The Mayor cited nightmares had by his daughter Eileen
She dreamed that ugly @&*#!'s face popped out the friggin' screen
They said no, they said no way.
Not in my Back yard he can not stay
That eyesore is a stain upon our nation
If you think he's livin' by me there's no way
G.E. felt the set back but refusing to surrender
He bought a house disguised as the guitarist of the Pretenders
But at the party we like to throw for new homeowners
we caught him when he couldn't play the lead from "Tattooed Love Boys"
They said no, they said no way.
Not in my Back yard he can not stay
That eyesore is a stain upon our nation
If you think he's livin' by me there's no way
A man has got the right to homestead anywhere he can
but that just begs the question, What exactly is a man?
Blond Frankenstein with Dutchboy hair would hardly qualify
So we must live free of this Hall & Oats reject or die
They said no, they said no way.
Not in my Back yard he can not stay
That eyesore is a stain upon our nation
If you think he's livin' by me there's no way
There may be a reason the Vandals don't back up Bob or Bowie. Ultimate sideman? Who's qualified to say? Two things I'm sure of...He'd be on my short list, and I wouldn't be on his.

I think we have beat this thread to death by now. But since it still shows some slight signs of life . . .

Look, any arist is going to have some fans and non fans (witness all the "I don't get" threads). For some reason, though, there does seems to be some extra vitriol directed at GE sometimes. I'm not sure why. It may be jealousy, it may be the "I-don't-getters" or it may be the TV band leader syndrome. Whatever it is, the guy is a monster player, is a knowledgable gear and music head, has a wife who loves him (we presume), has a very impressive resumé and everyone who meets him (including me) says he's a very nice guy.

Ya know, if you ask me, that adds up to a pretty good life.

Yeah, I felt the same way, but I like the bridge and saddles. I'm not sure about the pickup. I kinda like the hanging-in-the-ashtray thing.

Seems like a cool cat to me. Anytime I've seen him interviewed he was very nice.

After seeing the interview with G.E. Smith on the Fender site, I don't know how any Tele lover could think anything negative about him. I love the, " You can play anything with a Tele " comment. I also loved the comments he made about buying gear in the off hours when he was on the road instead of partying. His amp collection is incredible.
