Esperanza--Esperanza Spalding

She's phenomenal--a 23 year old jazz bassist/vocalist/composer who started teaching at Berklee almost the minute after she graduated. Sings in English and Spanish, great upright chops, terrific swing and (not that it should matter) cute as a bug's ear. If anybody could interest a 21st century pop audience in serious jazz, it could be this young lady; exciting stuff!

Right now, two are getting a lot of playing time:

Bobby Fuller, "El Paso Rock: Vol. 1", some excellent classic rock and surf (vol. 2 has his cover of "Miserlou" that gives Dick Dale a good run for the money). Vol. 1 also has an early recording of "I Fought the Law", with Jim Resse handling the lead work.

The second album is "London Calling", probably my favorite work by The Clash -- just some superb music going on from all over the spectrum.

A third album is also in the running, "Marquee Moon", by Television, my favorite CBGB era band.

Hey, I went through that phase with that album for about a month when it came out. Great stuff.
I'm currently living with "Day Trip" by Metheny's trio

about a month ago, as I had mentioned in that thread, i had made a copy of "tapestry" for a high school student who was going through some rough times...today she thanked me again, and informed me she was "totally living with that CD." (i.e, has it on all the time, on the iPod, in the car, while washing dishes, headphones at night, etc.) I liked the language of that, and I could identify with it--I certainly latch on to certain records and they become part of my everyday routine for a while, before I move on... so I thought I'd ask you all, what album are you currently "living with?"

i've got two right now, carla bley's "the lost chords find paulo fresu" and i'm currently re-discovering wilco's "sky blue sky." they go everywhere with me...
I have a bunch. The first is "Never, Ever Land" which is a 3cd set, it is a comp of the International Artisits lable which was home to the 13th Floor Elevators, Bubble Puppy, Red Krayola, etc. Some hits and misses but a good listen. Also comes with great liner notes and an interview with Leland Rogers (brother of Kenny). Also picked up "Thank You Freinds" which is a comp of artisits and recordings made by Ardent Studios and the Ardent lable from 1966 to the early 70's. Lots of interesting stuff including outtakes from Big Star, Alex Chilton, Cargo, and Terry Manning. This also vcomes with great liner notes and personal recollections from Ardent founder John Fry, engineer/artisit Terry manning and producer Jim Dickinson. Alot of great anglo-powerpop from Memphis. Also picked up the new remasters of the first 4 Bonzo Dog Doo Da band first four albums which is a big improvement over the "Cornology" box set. So I have been living pretty good.

I'm currently reliving the early 60's (to mid-70's) with the 3CD/DVD box "... Jersey Beat ... The Music Of FRANKIE VALLI & THE 4 SEASONS".

At the height of their career (1962-65) they were a match even for The Beatles, and with The Beach Boys they were among a very few American bands to survive the British Invasion in '64.

Been listening to a bunch of new (to me) stuff lately since I moved into a new flat. One of my flat-mates has been giving me a hard time about the fact that I keep repeating a few of the same discs - and they're from his collection! hahaha

James Brown - Live Vol.2
Dexter Gordon - Go
Snow Patrol - Eyes Open

Fountains of Wayne, "Welcome Interstate Managers"

Bought it used for $4. Don't understand why anyone would want to get rid of this gem. Sure, there are a few songs that are not my thing, but I've had it in the CD player since I bought it. Well, except when my oldest daughter sneaks it out.

Man, there are some great riffs in there!

Get a set of good headphones, your favorite beverages and/or other relaxation substances.
Turn off the lights, and listen loudly - engulf yourself in the music.
Pick one of these, and listen to the entire album, the way it was ment to be heard.

I lived with a huge SANYO walkman...you know the one that was so loud it gave a generation tinitus....The year was 1981 and Mr Wilder introduced me to Neil Young, Carole King, Janis Joplin and the Rolling Stones pre-Tatoo You stuff...I immediately bonded with everything Jim Morrison. The point is, I was going through the beginning of some really rough times, and for what seemed like the first time, an adult turned me on to something that I could use, that wasn't destructive to let my emotions out...good show man, I bet you impacted her more than you know...
thanks man,

every year, i have a student or two who i just "identify" with. this young lady has a hell of a story, and she trusted me enough to let me know what was going on in her life. i suppose the CD, no matter how small a token, was sort of my way of saying "i get you."...i had a teacher do the same thing for me when i was a high school senior, and going through a rough patch. he made me a copy of "kind of blue" actually...somehow, the wordless seemed to capture what i already couldn't put into words...

anyway, not to get all sentimental and hippy dippy about it, but i think the good folks of the tdpri, as diverse as we are, share that common thread of a real love for music, and we're not happy only listening for enjoyment...we devour it, it becomes part of us...this has been an enjoyable thread to read, i hope you all keep posting...at the very least, i've discovered some new music!
