Is a Pompadour worth the effort??

Okay, I need some feedback from those have experienced my dilemna.... My girlfriend is growing tired of the grease stains on the pillows, furniture etc. I have worn a greased pomp for over 6 years now and tired of the flack I get in some circles and especially at work.... I'm torn over whether to cut it off, tone it down. I've tried cleaning it up a bit... I have more of a high and tight style now..( no greasy ducktail in back no more, just long top and medium sides and buzzed down low all around.

Can anyone recommend a product that's not so hard on things.. but still looks greasy. I just can't see me playin rockabilly tunes without my shiny pompadour.

I had a friend in highschool that had a HUGE pomp, but pretty much only did it up when he played shows (he played stand up bass)...Most people didn't even know.

Wax. just straight beeswax or a beeswax product. it's still not stain free, but it's better Regular pomade is a pillowcase killer.

Don't stomp the pomp! It's the coolest hairstyle ever.

As to what products to use, well, it's Murray's for hold, Royal Crown for shine.

Just like the song says!

Keep it!

Keep everything tidy for the nighty by slipping on a head condom to keep things safe. It'll lead to more comfy bedtimes with girly girl too.

+1, Murray's beeswax - sleeping cap is not a bad idea either.

They sell pomade that is less greasy, more like hair gel, that is water soluble.. I wear that to work, when things need to be toned down a bit.
Check your local drug/grocery store, lots of different brands.

I have a semi-pomp- a bit like Brian Setzer crossed with Tintin, if you can imagine that.

I'd keep it- and I understand the hassle factor, but I reckon it is worth it.
Why not wear it down at work and slick it back/up when you go out?

Are you kidding me? A head condom? If I leaned over to my wife trying to put the moves on her with a swimming cap, she would not respond well.

Keep the pomp, but degrease before bed. I am with her, my wife spends a fortune on pillows and bedding (which I end up paying for).

Also, one day you could wake up with a scullet and wish you had the pomp back.

Jim

I haven't used that greasy kid stuff since I was a kid myself!

(Just kiddin')

My hair stylist always tries to put some stuff on my hair after every haircut. I should ask her what it is and do the "Elvis" thing.

A pompadour is worth the effort until it isn't worth the effort, just like long hair, or shaving your skull, or whatever. You'll know when it isn't worth the effort anymore, because that's when you'll quit doing it!

As a guy whose genetics made hairstyle matters mostly moot by the time I hit my late 30s, I can tell you that ultimately hairstyle is fun but irrelevant to living a rewarding life...

Cheers, Tim

Does anyone here have a skullet?
You know, a mullet that has gone bald.

I forget, does baldness go down one side of the family?
Is it mothers or fathers (or both)?
What happens if one grandfather went bald, but the other did not?

I wore grease in my hair for years... here's what I always did: I'd shower and wash my hair in the evening before bed, then take a towel and rub the grease out. As you probably already know, you cant really wash the grease out ... but rubbing your hair with a towel should get it out enough so it wont leave any grease spots on your sheets. Dont use a white towel, obviously!

Gawd, my dad used to Brylcreem my hair every morning before school! Once I learned how to just say no I haven't had anything in my hair since, except when the haircut lady wants to put something in.

To each his own. I'd say get a shower cap and keep the look you want. Just don't start wearing Leopard skin jackets.

Yeah, I had one of those. I got tired of cleaning the hair out of the shower drain, and now the wife gives me a buzz cut every two weeks.

Around here we call that do oldie locks.

A friend of mine has what is probably the largest pompadour in the country, and he's known for it. I'll have to ask him, but it looks like hair spray to me - nothing greasy about it.

i was a greaser for a long time... there's water based grease from japan... doesn't stain and washes right out with water... works exactly like sweet georgia brown, royal crown, black and white, nu-nile... looks a little wetter as opposed to greasy.... forgot the name... you can find it on japanese 50s/rockabilly sites and occasionally e-bay... haven't looked for it in years though... tj

What's more important to you, the Rockabilly look or the sound? If it's the latter, I'd lose the grease and maybe try some type of gel. IMHO

Effort?

Regular wearing I just use hair glue (comes in a yellow toothpaste style tube) or hairspray, washes out easily. For shows or big outings I'll use grease/pomade.

Not really much effort that way.

For around the house or nothing fancy, I wear a fedora. I've got piles of hats.

I've got two words for you man, OLIVE OIL.

I'm serious. Go natural - it's good for your scalp and goes into your hair rather than staying on it like an oil slick and ruining her pillows. Trust me, I used Royal Crown for years until an Italian woman turned me on to olive oil. Your lady will love you for it.

You just need like a dime to quarter sized amount, depending on how long your hair is, and you know, use the comb if you have to. But you've probably got it trained already.

Me too. Oil's messy, it smells, and it's too hard to deal with. I wore that greasy kid stuff all through high school just to be "cool"; never again.

I'm pretty sure your baldness follows your maternal grandfather - I had one grandfather who had a mop of hair all his life (85 yrs), the other could get a job in a pool hall.... I'm 40 with hair down to the small of my back so I guess the maternal grandfather bit is true (well, so far at least -I've got way more hair at my temples than my dad did when he was 40)

Keep the pomp - without good hair you're just another shmuck!!

YES it is! But....I totally feel for your gal. I HATE having the back of our killer couch stained up, I HATE greasy pillowcases, I HATE that gunk on my hands and under my nails when I touch my husbands hair...but I sure do love the way it looks. I'm used to now but I feel for that woman of yours!

Black and White is muchos cool, by the way. It doesn't seem as greasy (from a girl's perspective...you know, the one who actually touches your hair!). My husband uses natural grease now - his hair is getting long and I swear he never washes it! But I absolutely love his hair and he's totally got that John Doe thang goin' on right now and I ain't complainin'!

When you're worried about what to do with your hair - you have too little else to worry about.

Seriously - since I was a wee lad the only thing to ever go in my hair has been shampoo/conditioner and a brush. I had real long hair once - it was a pain. I'm glad the unkempt look is "in" in some circles - makes my life easier.

is a pompadour worth it? it depends on whether you got enough hair to pull it off! (see my avatar.) hahaha!

My maternal grandfather was pretty bald by 25. I'm 14 years older with no hair-loss, so either grandma's got some 'splaining to do, or it's not that cut and dried.

I'm in the same camp here... but mine was bald by 17... he had the great combover in snow white by the time I came along. I'm 40 now and am the joke of the band... we talked of calling it "John and the male patterns". Never met my Father's father. But my Pops and my Uncle had full heads of hair with good color well into their 70's. So, I ain't 'askeert.

I usually leave my hair alone during the week, unless I've got some cool place to go. Then I use Nexus Versastyler. It's okay, nice and crisp and depending on how wet my hair is when I put it in, depends on how wet it looks later. But, it doesn't hold if the car windows down too long... I'm gonna have to try some of that wax stuff... seems entertaining!
