Wrong first impression
This has happened more than once to me. I've started to for an opinion about something based on my experience only to find that my experience wasn't what I was thinking.
The first time, I formed an opinion on the Klon pedal. It sounded good, but kind of stiff and "Forward" during the demo. Well, I was playing an amp that I had no experience with, and later when I tried the same amp without the Klon, I found the amp to sound stiff and forward. Oops. Today I stumbled across a store that carried the Swart line of amps. I was thrilled. I've been wanting to try the 6V6se for a long time. Well, I plugged into the amp and was extremely dissapointed by the low output and farty tone. Just plain bad. I plugged into the Swart Space Tone Reverb next to it and was greeted by the same kind of sound. As I was getting ready to unplug and leave, an employee stopped by the room. He asked what I thought and I told him. He told me to turn the volume up on the guitar. I said both the volume and tone are all the way up. A frown came over his face and he said that something was wrong. He brought in a new cable and I ALMOST WET MYSELF! Loud, fat, rich, dynamic, you name it. Two of the nicest sounding amps I've played. Just a wonderful experience. If the employee had stopped by 2 minutes later I would have left and wondered why everyone was praising these amps. The bad cable allowed enough to come through that I assumed that the amps were voiced in a certain way. The would have been sad. I have to remind myself to check the variables when something doesn't seem right!

Absolutely. It's easy when it's something obvious. The problem comes when you comes across something that doesn't sound "Wrong", it just doesn't sound good.
