Thumb picks anyone?
I used to use Zookies (30') for everything, but I've had a revelation!!
Fred Kelly speed picks! Used them for yesterday's shows and loved them. Now I just use the Zookies for Dobro only. Also tried the slick pick by Fred Kelly and liked it also.

I'm a big fan of these:

I'm using the medium slick and speed picks. Got some heavies coming, which I prefer.

I've used Hercos exclusively since the 80s. I discovered that the tortoiseshell ones are nearly impossible to break. Must be whatever they do to the composition of the plastic to make them tortoiseshell, but they hold up a lot better than red, blue or yellow.

I've never broken one, but yes, the "stiffness" is definitely from l-r in that picture. I prefer the red and tortoise ones.

This is the one I like, Pro-Pik. I don't like the big thumb ones, they feel huge to me.

My favorites for laps steel, I use the heavy ones; I like that the tip is slightly smaller - makes me feel more in touch/closer connected with the strings than the usual looooong-tipped thumb-picks. But I just started learning pedal steel, and while I still have to figure out the finer details of ergonomics, it seems like longer regular thumbpicks work better for that one for me... |

I like the Slick pick because I just let the tip (rounded side) stick out just a bit when I use a flat pick. It seems more natural than the longer thumb picks.

not sure of the brand, but I use these very cool thumbpick that just have a little tab instead of a full pick. They were easier to get used to as they are more like just using your thumb and not so big or obtrusive.
You can even shave them down more until you gradually get used to them at full size which is about 1/4"long X 1/8" wide. They are great and I don't have to shave them anymore. I have been using them since 2002. They are a bit stiff at first, but soften up after a bit. Or, if too stiff could be filed to your liking. But they are available in only one thickness. |
