Probably either the Eagles reunion or seeing The MC5 live after reading the over-hyped Rolling Stone article.

The last band I was in.
We had so much potential...a phenomenal drummer who could harmonize, a solid bass player who harmonized, a great female keyboardist who harmonized, a guy who blew our minds on sax and violin... Then we had a lead singer who wanted to play rhythm guitar. Too bad everything he played sounded like the same song. And he had a huge ego. He felt he had more experience than any of us because he tried to make it in the music business for 15 years in Seattle. We practiced and practiced for months on end and the 5 of us just got so frustrated with the singer. After 4.5 months of practicing, we had our one and only gig. We did 20 songs in front of about 50 people and we didn't make any money. Such a disappointment and waste of time.

lol, Gary. I think we all experience that on some level.
I'm gonna go with Izzy Stradlin & The Juju Hounds. I was really looking forward to his first post-GNR album. I've since learned that high expectations in others usually generate a certain level of disappointment. So now I reserve them for myself.

Seeing Jimmy Page get more applause from swigging out of a bottle of Jack Daniel's than for playing his guitar, because he was actually better at drinking...that night, anyway.
Also...getting my mother to stand on line at Ticketron to get me Zappa tickets for Halloween in NY in 79. Somebody must have just put some house seats back in the computer because she scored 4 across in the first row! And at the Palladium, you could put your feet up on the stage from the first row. Zappa had the flu! He was wearing a wooley sweater and a scarf and was shivering. I felt terrible for the guy, but the show sucked. |

Taylor 20th Anniversary model acoustic guitar. This was probably about 14 years ago. I was itching for a new acoustic and had a Martin D-35 that was about 15 years old at the time. I was all set to trade it after reading a review of the Taylor in Guitar Player magazine. They gave it an "A+++" rating (also gave a Santa Cruz the same grade). Anyway, I'd called several music shops in Iowa and found one in Iowa City. Up I go with my D-35 and check book in tow. As soon as I saw the Taylor I made the deal for trade and was about to take the Taylor home when the sales guy asked, "Don't you want to play it?" I thought about it, almost didn't in my haste to get back home and play it but thought "What the heck?" So I sat down and started to play it and my heart slowly began to sink. This was a $3000. guitar?!! It sounded dead and cheap compared to my Martin. I could only think of two things that would account for the disappointment I felt...1. It was an orchestra style guitar and my Martin was a dreadnought which made it much more full sounding, and 2. the strings on the Taylor were dead as a door nail and badly needed a change. But my facial expression evidently couldn't hide my overwhelming disappointment as the sales guy said "You don't like it do you?" I said "Frankly, no". He said, "No problem, I'll return your money". Thank God for "mom and pop" music stores. A large chain would not have likely given me a refund. Since he didn't have anything else that interested me, I took my D-35 and check book across town and traded for a nice Martin D-41 and left a happy camper. Moral of the story...always, always, always, try out a guitar before buying it. Or, any other piece of musical equipment for that matter. Just because someone else says something sounds good to them doesn't necessarily mean it will to you.

Lou Reed at the Wiltern in LA 2003.
Getting stuck at work and missing Soundgarden at the Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland in 1996. They broke up a few months later. Not seeing Jane's Addiction before 1991. Just missing out on being old enough to see Zeppelin with John Bonham

As stated before here at TDPRI - not going to Monterey Pop or The Last Waltz at Winterland, and not seeing the Marriot/Frampton Humble Pie or the Allman Bros. Band with Duane & Barry when I had the chance.
Seeing Blue Cheer live - awful. |

Cream reunion....The tones were just wrong..enjoyed it for what it was..but it just really didnt capture the essence of THE CREAM.
Led Zeppelin reunion... The last remnants of my youthful hero worship vanished... RUSH...when I started seeing musicians OFF the side of the stage playing...Nothing wrong with having other musicians...for layers and parts they cant pull off...but put them on stage at least. |

Anyway.... my biggest disappointments were 1) The Black Crowes album, "By Your Side" and 2) Jimmy Page tweaking his back on Leno two days before I was supposed to see him with the Crowes. Fricking wuss, cancelling a tour rather than using a stool.... |

I was hugely disappointed back when Melon Collie came out. Such a letdown after Siamese Dream and a huge derail into that post-grunge despair-rock we're still dealing with today. So much so that I boycotted their show when they rolled into town the following fall, and we didn't get many shows rolling through town.

Dire Straits on the "Brothers in Arms" tour. I loved Knopfler. Drove to Philly from North Carolina to see them, and then saw the next night in DC. Exact same show. Exact same solos. Exact same "spontaneous" chatter between songs. Jack Sonni got one solo each night on "Wild West End" and kicked Mark's butt. I pretty much never listened to them again.
