If you like Blues/Outlaw/Haggardish Anti-Drinking songs...

...Then check out summa Ray Scott's new stuff!

His new "Crazy Like Me" gives ya a healthy dose of blues.

"Hell Got Raised Again Tonight" follows "I'll Just Stay Here and Drink" right down to the Blues Scale Telecaster Solo and the whole "Drink till you Die" kinda thang.

And "Sometimes The Bottle Hits You Back" is a great ode to Sunday morning in Outlaw fashion, complete with Drop D Tele playin'.

If any of this interests you fellas, I beg of you, please, take a look. Ray Scott (in my humble opinion) is the 'new' artist in Nashville today. His guitar player, Phillip Moore (or P-Mo) has "More talent in his pinkie finger than all of Beale Street combined". Seriously, listen to Ray's first album, crazy Tele content. I even hear the P-Mo ripped the neck off of a American Deluxe before.

Honestly great music

I'm listening to his music (on his myspace) as I write this.

I like his style and I like almost all of his favorites and influences, and Phillip Moore is obviously a great picker, and I'm sure thankful there are still artists keeping the outlaw tradition alive .

On the other hand, I've never seen a "clean" outlaw - they were always dirty, sweatty, dusty and raggy and sounded like they had too many whiskeys and cigarettes .

This guy both sounds and looks very clean, and the whole production is real smooth, without any sharp corners, and it makes me wonder if Ray is really an outlaw after all .....

Still I prefer him to most of todays "pop" country though .

Don't get mad at me ... I'm only being honest ...

This is the Ray Scott that had a song called Please Mr. DJ that was very similar to a song by Dale Watson saying "Please Mr. DJ won't you please play, a real country song?"

I thought that song was lame after Dale had basically recorded the same thing years earlier. But perhaps Dale ripped off Ray?

I think we're playing with Ray at a showcase thingie here in a couple of weeks. It's at BB Kings in case you guys are around. I'm told we're the last band going on just before 8:00 on June 5th. Ray may not be there, I don't remember but the guy I'm playing with is buddies with him and in fact wanted to a couple of Ray's songs at the showcase. I had to talk him out of it since it's his showcase. I think we're playing at Cadillac Ranch in the afternoon that Saturday. Ya'll come!

An outlaw is a person living the lifestyle of outlawry, meaning literally "outside the law".

I feel that Ray lives outside of Nashville's 'comfort zone'. It's not really the music sound (Although I think the neo-traditional electric sound of his records is pretty outlaw) it's whether or not the cooks on Music Row like you. Ray's been playin' around in Nashville for the past 15 or so years, and has been fighting tooth and nail to get his stuff out. Warner Bros. took up the challenge, but barely marketed it. It still sold very well. Ever since that Ray's been trying to get free of the conformity that they enforce and finally managed to do so recently.

What does all my gibberish mean? That Ray doesn't abide by Nashville's laws and is, therefore, an outlaw. Well, at least in my opinion.

What's an "anti-drinking song"?

I've listened to a little of his music and it seems pretty good but I find it really ironic that Nashville is producing 'outlaw' music.
Hell, the whole outlaw movement began as a protest against Nashville.
Kind of funny.

I know I am betraying my ignorance, but I have never heard of this guy. I see he is down in Geetar Town, but where is he from, etc? Someone fill in the blanks.
I like what I am hearing.
But, why does he look like he just stepped off of the Nashville assembly line, the half grown beard so meticulously trimmed, the hat (which don't get me wrong, I like cowboy hats, they're downright comfortable).
I guess I kind of go along with RodeoTex.
Does he write his own stuff?
His songs are real country.

Ray is from North Carolina, and grew up playing guitar with his dad. He says now that his dad was his biggest musical influence. Ray went to Nashville to try to get some moo-lah in the 1990's(?) and formed a band. It promptly fell apart. He then went to a college in Atlanta to study in music/business. This more or less teaches you the "ins and outs" of Nashville, and what the producers are lookin' for. He returned to Nashville, set up the 'Superband' (okay, that's just me) and got a contract with Warner Bros. He managed to get his first album out, My Kinda Music, around 2005 (bare bone country, excellent album!) but had a buttload of troubles with em'. I recall seeing a quote saying that they wanted him to go towards a more "marketable" sound. Ray would have none of that. He's spent the last 2 1/2 years cutting the ties between the label. he finally managed to get on a smaller, more freelance label to record his second album "Crazy Like Me" which is to be released very soon.

Ray certainly doesn't like Nashville and they aren't too awful fond of him either. I think the only reason Ray even went there is because it is literally impossible to sell country records anywhere else. (No offense Texas)

As far as his songwriting, Ray has actually written and co-written several smaller country hits for various artists (can't recall any off the top of my head). Ray more or less writes all of his material. Ray writes AT LEAST 95% of his material. His guitarist, Phillip Moore also co-writes with him a lot.
