Audrey Lee

Hi folks! it's with great pride that I announce the birth of my daughter. Audrey Lee Eckert was born on Friday at 6:50 pm. Weighing in at 7lbs 12oz and 20" big, she joins her brother Kyle as heirs to the Eckert fortune!

and now....THE REST OF THE STORY.......

On friday night at about 10:00 I left the hospital to take 3 year old Kyle back to his grandparents' house after his visit to meet his new sister. We came upon a police sobriety checkpoint. No problem, I was in good shape even after 17 hours of my husbandly baby birthing duty. I was driving my wifes car, one of two Subaru Outbacks that we own.
When i couldn't find my wifes registration or insurance papers the cops checked us out on the computer.
There was NOTHING about her car on their database!
It seems the DMV NEVER sent us a re-reg form after we changed insurance companys a year ago! We've had 3 Subaru Outbacks in the past 4 years and we never noticed that one didn't get documentation!
I didn't bother at first to tell the cop that i had been at the hospital because years of late night driving experience has taught me that the "man" dosen't want to hear your sob story. But having not slept much in the last 20 hours I was having a hard time answering questions with the cruiser lights flashing and the rain falling and all, so when he finally asked where I had been I told him about the hospital/baby thing. He said I should have told him sooner and the tow truck was on it's way!!
So, they towed away our car(and the infant seat that my new daughter was going to ride home in) leaving me and little Kyle(who slept through the whole thing) to wait for a ride from my father.
So i was issued a summons for June 2nd. Hopefully I can put together enough documentation to convince the Hanging Judge of Rockville Superior Court. That the whole thing is a rotten misunderstanding on EVERYONES part and the police last friday didn't make the streets any safer by leaving an overtired man and a sleeping three year old boy on the side of the road in the rain.

Well......that's my story and I will end it with a question: perhaps i'm just more sensitve to it at this time but....where is the point at which a cop, or ANY authority figure, for that matter, should act from his heart, and forget what the computer says or dosent say?

Congratulations to you and your wife!! What a beauty! You're gonna have fun with the two of them. We have a 5 year old grandson and 2 year old grandaughter...it's a great combination and age "spread". Really sorry to hear about the thing with the cops. It all depends on who pulls you over, that's for sure. I think they have a bit of lee-way in a case like that. Could have given you a warning or citation for invalid registration I would think. Didn't have to tow your car and leave you stranded with a youngster! Anyway, best of luck to you and your family!

Congratulations on the new baby!

I'm sure the po-po have some leway, but on something like that they probably have to get tough. Really, all you can do is tell your side to the judge and hope for the best.

The only day I didn't have insurance on a car was the only day I was at-fault in an accident, and boy was it expensive. Fortunately nobody got hurt. Funny thing was, I thought the wife paid the insurance and she thought I paid it. And the insurance company was less than helpful, even though I had been a customer for probably 5 years.

THANK YOU EVERYONE! for all the kind words. here's a couple updates: Audrey is a voracious eater, a world class pooper, a great sleeper(like her dad), and a truly beautiful young lady(like her mom).

as for the DMV fiasco.........

my wife Kirsten is the organized one. she keeps all the check stubs, reg notices and EVERYTHING for years, in neatly organized file cabinets. we have found NOTHING about our car registration or or emissions inspection since 2006. we have a valid insurance card that unfortunately hadn't made it's way into the cars glove compartment yet. we bought the car in dec 2005. we took over the registration that had 2 months left till expiration.. apparently the registration expired and NO NOTICE was sent to us regarding this. no warning notice, no cancellation notice....NOTHING
in CT, the DMV usually sends you a re-reg form which you fil out and send in with an $80 check and everything is hunkeydorey.
we own 4 cars. there is DMV paperwork rotating through our home all the time. we know our cars are insured, although i admit our latest insurance card hadn't found it's way into this particular Subaru.
so....what will the judge decide???are we negligent because we didn't happen to notice the teeny little sticker on our lisence plate was out dated? or will he find fault with the "well oiled machine" that is the CT dmv for apparently losing all our info? hhmmm. i've got a bad feeling about this!
