+1 on Travelling Wilburys

But....

Discipline era King Crimson!

Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Bill Bruford.

Admittedly these guys have worked together for a while, but Fripp was correct in saying that during the Discipline period KC was the best performing rock band in the world. And where else aside from jazz are you you going to find such accomplished musicians on their respective instrument.

I would also nominate the keith Jarret trio with Gary Peacock and Jack deJohnette

Well, its a real group and has been described as a Super Group. They're Canadians and frankly, they rock. I put it out there as sort of a gag, to see if anyone besides me had ever heard of them but I really do like those guys.

You are not obscure, but rare! Great disc,eh?

I guess I hang out with a lot of old Deadheads. It really did cause a minor sensation when it came out, though - I think that and Will the Circle Be Unbroken (another supergroup album, why didn't I think of it!) turned more city and suburb kids into bluegrass freaks than any other 'sixties-'seventies recordings. And Old and In the Way must be on CD by now. Anyhow, if you like that, check this out - the story behind the record: http://www.amazon.com/Grateful-Dawg-.../dp/B00005UER0

Didn't Leslie West etc have some success before forming Mountain - that was a good first album.

The Knitters were Dave Alvin of the Blasters and everybody from X except for Billy Zoom. It's not like they were chart-toppers, but it was a great combination.

Damn Yankees....the tremendous songwriting and vocals of Nightrangers Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw of Styx with the absolutely ferocious guitar playing of Ted Nugent put this band in a class with very few others. Nugents playing was the best I have ever heard because he could focus on playing, not being the bandleader/vocalist. I love gigs when I can just stick and pop with the guitar, man those are FUN!

How about the Players? Perhaps the most versatile instrumentalists working today-

Brent Mason - guitar
Paul Frankilin - steel
Eddie Bayers - drums
John Hobbs - keys
Michael Rhodes - bass

I've seen them live and there is no genre they cannot cover. They may not be "world known" as solo artists, but they are some of the pre-eminent performers on their instruments.

ELP was basically The Nice with a new drummer and a bass player that could actually sing

Already so much great stuff here so I guess I'll have to cheat in order to add to the mix. Two great multi-artist performances:

The Last Waltz
One Night in San Francisco - Al Di meola, John McLaughlin, Paco De lucia
