Barefoot Jerry (who were previously Area Code 615) was not a one-off band,
but what a great group of musicians: Charlie McCoy, Wayne Moss, Kenny Buttrey,
Russ Hicks, Fred Newell and various stellar session players.
Many of them played on Blonde on Blonde.
I love their fantastic album Watchin' TV.

i'll throw a few odder choices out there, since you all have picked some of the absolute best already...

kind of blue

steely dan's "aja" (i know it wasn't really a "band" band, but think about the names on that record...)

Mine, too - for me, nothing else has ever come close. It's still in frequent rotation on my stereo. (Though, as I've mentioned before, I do usually skip "Man's Temptation.")

Hmmm...

I want to vote for Super Session, but maybe that's because it's such a great album. Kooper, Bloomfield & Stills weren't phenomenally famous when they came together (and all three never came together).

I'm on board with Blind Faith, perhaps the quintessential supergroup. Somebody mentioned The Honeydrippers, but I don't think anyone's mentioned The Firm.

p.d. Wilburys rule!

And I'm glad there was Super Session, because if there weren't, I'd have to choose from the Flatlanders, the Texas Tornados, Trio, Mermaid Avenue, and Little Village.

Some interesting ideas. But I think that Joe Cocker and Mad Dogs and Englishman is close. but I would nominate the Original Delaney and Bonnie and Friends - Gerry McGee, Carl Radle, Jim Gordon, Jim Keltner, Leon Russell, Bobby Keyes, Jim Price, Rita Coolidge (was J.J. Cale involved at one time?- also Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn. Cant get better than this. Even with the addition of Clapton it was an already assume band.

Traffic would be my second pick.

Do the Eagles count as a supergroup? They all had moderate success elsewhere before forming. Certainly as much as some of the other collectives being mentioned.

We also all seem to have forgotten one of the earliest supergroups: Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

And here's one for the ages:
The Super Super Blues Band, with Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, and Howlin' Wolf.

A rather obscure album recorded in 1973---"Old & In The Way",all bluesgrass.Released in '75.

Jerry Garcia--banjo
Peter Rowan--guitar and vocals
David Grisman--mandolin and vocals
Vassar Clements---fiddle
John Kahn---acoustic bass

This album kicks!

Emerson, Lake & Palmer on the "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends" tour, early 70's (I saw it, all 72,000 watts of quad sound. They had STACKS of Crown power amplifiers). At the end of the show the coliseum looked like a fog had rolled in and I had to crab walk down the stairs from the nosebleed seats due to a temporary 'chemical imbalance' (ahem). My ears rang until the next day.

Ah, the memories!!!

+1 for Emerson, Lake & Palmer
..from the Nice, King Crimson, and Atomic Rooster, respectively.

Big fan of the Wilburys! Though I'm probably really stretching the definition of supergroup by including the Yayhoos into the mix... their debut, Fear Not the Obvious, is very good.

Ambel & Baird wield Teles frequently too:

Actually the first supergroup distinction has traditionally been bestowed on CSN.

Dr. John, Mike Bloomfield and John Hammond put out an album called "Triumvirate" that is quite good. I guess ego clashes almost killed it, and it seems strange that Hammond got ALL the vocals, when Dr. John is such a killer vocalist, but it was still a good effort. Little Village with John Hiatt and friends is good as well.

I must be getting old , as i've never heard of a few of the supergroups in this thread lol

My idea of supergroups I guess were bands such as Queen , Dire Straits and Pink Floyd etc . Later came bands such as U2 and Oasis which I guess were also super groups in their own right .

As for CSN being the first super group , wouldn't the Beatles have had something to say about that ?

As nobody's mentioned it yet , I think i'll go for Alchemy by Dire Straits

I was only thinking to myself a few days ago , about just how many hugely successful bands there were in previous decades , but I can't really see any front runners in modern music that will be remembered with such vigour as bands gone by

Wow,most of my friends (all my age, some seasoned musicians) have never heard of it because of a small distribution.
You are not obscure, but rare! Great disc,eh?

How about the Souther, Hillman, Furay Band, first album. They would certainly qualify according to the criteria we've established. Richie Furay's vocals never sounded better. I saw them at an outdoor show in Sedalia Missouri, in 1974. They were very good live as well. I remember Joe Walsh (solo then), and the Eagles were on that show, too, but I liked SHF band the best.

Hey, I've got Old and in the Way! One of my favorite albums, one that I bought on the strength of the album cover back in 1975. The music has stood up well, some 33 years later.
