I don't like Neil Young, never have........

...don't like his voice....don't like him.....but I like this, a lot.

Never heard of the song before or seen this video before a couple of days ago, and I'm impressed with the absolute coolness of this thing. It's simply beautiful in it's surreal cheesy-ness. It looks like they might have spent $500 bucks making it, and a nickle more would have ruined it. Young looks like something the cat dragged in ,which is perfect. I would have been proud to have made this video. I have a new-found respect for him because of this thing, so what if it's not 'profound', it pushes most of my buttons.

'Wonderin'

Neil Young records what he wants, and doesn't care what the label wants. This makes him cool.

I've never cared for his sound, but have always dug his attitude. However, there's a song on the Greendale album/soundtrack called Be The Rain that really blew me away. And no, I can't explain it.

I always loved this one, though some of you might call it a piece of crap.

The first band I was in broke up eventually because I liked Neil Young and the other guitarist absolutely did not. If you didn't like Neil, you sure weren't gonna like the second band.

Whether you like someone's style, their voice is strictly a question of chance. I'm just lucky enough to like everything the Neil has done.

Except Trans, of course.

Thanks fer the clip.

There are so many great Neil Young performances, it's hard to know where to start.

I really like him. I can totally understand people that don't get him, but he is one of the most real and honest musicians I know of. Much like Dylan, you can criticize his voice, his harmonica playing, his career choices, his odd artistic directions, and his guitar playing, but in the end what you get is something totally genuine.

It's not for everyone, but no great artist is.

I like most of Mr. Young's music and have been a fan for 40+ years. I also like about half of TRANS and REACTOR, too. There is always someting of merit on a Neil Young album. I favor the Crazy Horse material, but his acoustic work in concert is wonderful. I'm not a fanatic, but his legacy as a song writer and musician will be respected for decades to come.

I also understand why folks don't dig his performances, but his songwriting should have a glimmer for every rock music fan.

with you

I can only take small doses of Neil

too whiney

he can't play electric guitar either, it's a joke really. I know. I saw him in the 80s live from front row seats when he had that stage with the giant amps as props.

he's a "harmonica with acoustic guitar" act

He did a 3 album hits package in the late 70s......that's where he peaked.....and that album was good.

and of course I will NEVER forgive him for recording Southern Man. If he wouldn't have done that we woud not have to be subjected to the functional illiterate abysmal no talent meanderings of my least favorite song ( Sweet Home Alabama ) performed by my least favorite band ( Lynyrnd Skynyrd ).....an embarassment to United States history of recorded music.

So I'll never forgive Neil for that.

He was a pioneer with CSN &Y. And sadly he really released alot of dreck.

Okay I was only joking about Southern Man, but it's true. No Sounhern man-no Sweet Home Alabama

Aren't you glad he doesn't play a telecaster?

think about this

Neil Young is an unusual artist.

He has been able to sustain a recording/performing career with diverse product. Some of his songs are fun catchy pop dittys that are really good work: Cinnamon Girl, some of his Buff -Spring songs like Mr. Soul.

But there's some real " head scratchers " in his body of work....like the Trans record....that was mentioned above.

The guitar players who use this site have a certain degree of musical savvy.
Like me, some see Neil as somewhat perplexing. The guy who started this thread said he didn't care for Neil, but liked one piece of his work. Thats cool with me.
I like some of his songs. Others I think are horrible. So if Neil wants to record " whatever he wants", lets hope he listens to it before he releases it!

LOL! As if he could have known! Ironically, Southern Man is a seriously well-intentioned social commentary that's irrelevant to its classic rock consequences. The South was a racial disaster when he wrote that, and I don't think the prevalence of "turn it up" on 70s classic rock radio was anywhere in his mind.

In fact, I always thought that his song "Alabama" was more the catalyst for Sweet Home.

He's written a few good tunes........."Harvest" is a masterpiece album.
But,keep him (and C,S,&N) off the electric guitar.

Neil sparked my imagination and encouraged me to continue endeavoring to coax original songs out of an my head with nothing but an acoustic guitar as acompee.., ucompani... uh, sumpthin' to go wid' it...

An important and wonderful artist, from Buffalo Springfield to the present.
The song Wonderin' was an old, unreleased one, resurrected
for the Everybody's Rockin' album.
There's a very differerent version of the song
on the crazy good Neil Young & Crazy Horse at the Fillmore 1970.

Big fan here, which doesn't mean I like everything he's made. Heck, does anyone like absolutely everything made by their favourite bands/artists? Even the Beatles and Elvis made some really bad stuff sometimes...

Neil's place in music, like it or not, is sealed by his Neil Young + Crazy Horse album and the song "Alabama."

"...your Cadillac has got a wheel in the ditch and a wheel on the track" uses the State of Alabama as a metaphore for the entire United States.

Actually, he does. I remember seeing a videoclip somewhere on Youtube where he plays a blackguard tele.
