What do you guys think about Johnny Winter?

I have the "blues experiment" album and I think its awesome. The vocals could be a little more "upfront" but other than that, its great. I'm listening to the San Diego Sports Arena show on Wolfgang's Vault, and its very cool. I also love Johnny's work with Muddy. Probably three of my favorite all time blues albums. I've actually got some bootleg concerts of Muddy & Johnny that have been gathering dust. Think its time to take a listen!

To me, Johnny is the man. He is the reason I started playing blues many, many years ago. Progressive Blues Experment, Johnny Winter And, all of his first few albums plus the live one were not only a revelation, but inspiration for me and my life long, guitar playing buddy. While I don't listen to him much at all any more, I will always be greatful for the spark he lit under me to play the blues.

Johnny WInter has never sold out.

He has always did it his way not caring if its radio friendly or not.

We need more originals like him. .

I love Johnny Winter! His early stuff is great, and 'Hey man, Where's Your Brother' (from the 80's, I think) is killer. I even have the live Johnny Winter And album from the early 70's with Rick Derringer on 2nd guitar. They sound a little out of control and were probably (literally) flying high, but it's still fun.

Johnny plays more notes than I want to (or can) but they're good notes!

Years ago I saw him live at the Diamond Club (now defunct) in Toronto - I was sitting at a table right up against the stage. Man, does he ever make it look easy! I almost quit the guitar on the spot.

You and I were separated at birth. The four albums you mention are my favorite albums.

I love me some Johnny Winter. The early stuff, the Blue Sky era, Alligator-to-Pointblank era, are all good. He can go from authentic delta grind to blinding guitar heroics and back again, and make it all work.

He is also unparalleled as a slide guitarist - he definitely has his own style. (Cooder, Allman, Haynes, Trucks, Brozman, Lindley are all equally good, but stylistically different from Johnny).

Can't belive you brought him up; I've been playing Muddys "Hard Again" non stop (literally) and just today at lunch was browsing for other JW recordings.

I've been trying to get the groove for "Cross Eyed Cat" down, that one makes my speakers stink (it's so funky).

I like most of his stuff, but "Johnny Winter" (1969) is my favorite. Best use of a Fender Mustang I've heard to date ...

My favorite slide playing of all time is on Hard Again, King Bee, and I'm Ready. Both Johnny and Muddy's playing are just awesome - what I aspire to as a slide player.

Absolutely bloodthirsty. Johnny has the killer instinct.

All that heavy talent up there: Cropper, Duck, Anton, Keltner...

And that "bandleader" mugging and showboating his way through a burning set.

I've watched that clip a dozen times and G.E. ruins it for me every time.

I love Johnny! Wish I could pull off more of his songs! "Hustled Down In Texas" is in my all time top ten favs!

He actually made our little backwater on Canada's East Coast this winter, what a show! ...and he's scheduled to be back this summer!

I've been and continue to be a big fan of Johnny Winter. The disc I like the listen to often is "Winter of 88" of course I can't play a lick of it, but I still get all excited when I hear it.

I saw him recently live. He has slowed down considerably.
But when he came out for the encore and played a couple tunes slide on the Firebird, it was good old Johnny!

"Johnny's the boss man." Muddy Waters (was that on Hard Again or I'm Ready?)

Don't really like his music overall and visually he creeps me out.

He's a pretty proficient guitar player and I know nothing about him as a person.

When you post about an opinion on a guy's music, sometimes people react violently... so I have to add a disclaimer about the guy personally or his proficiency on the instrument :)

Genius guitarist- a bit of a mess though in his personal life which took its toll.
He was taken advantage of by management, had numerous drug problems.
I always wonder 'what if' he had of gotten it together.

A lot of his albums were released by Roy Ames, the owner of several of the master recordings, released without JW's permission.

I LOVE Johnny Winter.

Wish my turntable worked, as most of my Winter is on vinyl.

His guitar playing is way over the top...but I like it anyway. I definitely prefer his style and tone to someone like Stevie Ray Vaughn (for example).

I think he's an awful singer though... a white guy trying to sound black (and failing to do so in a big way).

While he may be somewhat visually creepy, at least he doesn't have GE Smith's haircut.

Johnny Winter... one of the all-time greats! In the early 70's, he set the world on fire.
