Favorite non-musical "Rock Moment"
Have you ever been to a concert where something really amazing happens not directly related to the music?
When I was in college we went to see Neil Young at Madison Square Garden with Crazy Horse (Linda Ronstadt opened). After a rousing rendition of Southern Man someone ran on stage from the wings and handed Neil a note. Neil announced "The War is Over!". After about ten minutes of pandemonium, he and the band kicked it up a notch on Cinnamon Girl and we were all just overwhelmed... Truly a night to remember!

the first time I saw Jimi Hendrix was in a hotel ballroom in Washington D C in 67 or 68. Evidently the house was supposed to supply the PA-so they set a 2x12 bandmaster cab on each side of the stage--that's it. When Jimi went to sing you could not hear anything----so he stopped and said tonight will be all instrumental-------------------------killer show

When I saw Buddy Guy a few years back he plugged his polka dot strat into a wireless unit and began walking around in the audience. He walked down the row me and my dad were in and I patted him on the back. Very cool!

I saw a Poco concert where someone up front in the audience had brought their little toddler girl with them. At some point during introductions Ritchie is holding this little girl up for everyone to see and exclaiming how pretty she was, and saying how he missed his little daughter.
But these examples really are all about the music. I can't imagine anything worse than going to see a band and having them read poetry all night. People that spend hard money to see smoke, makeup, effects or choreography really worry me.

I once was at a Santana concert, circa 1979, and two guys got in a fight right in front of the stage. In the middle of a solo, and without missing a note, Carlos walked to the front of the stage, looked intently at them with his best "compassionate smile" face, and shook his head back and forth as if to say, "No".
The guys immediately quit fighting, and after a little sheepish hesitation, shook hands. Awesome. Quote:
Very cool.

I saw a T-Bone Burnett show in the late 80s or early 90s that ended up on the hood of a car.
Long story short, it was a CBS showcase show as a part of New Music Seminar. In short, about 10 of us paid to get in. A bunch of acts, some good (Shaun Colvin) some not so good (the russian Bob Dylan) T-bone was the "headliner" but by the time he came out around midnight, everyone was completely trashed, and talking or whatever. He makes a few commments "Sorry I'm interrupting your conversation." No response. Stops one song mid verse, unplugs and starts another song, and walks around by the bar. No one noticed. So finally, he grabs his second guitar, says "I'm going outside where it's quiet" and marches out the door. About 20 of us follow him, including Marshall Crenshaw, who picks up the second guitar. T-Bones on the hood of a Buick next to a parking sign and he and Crenshaw play the mother of all encores, a bunch of old Buddy Holly songs--Not Fade Away was especially good--and the like. Don't know if anyone inside ever noticed he was gone. best Allen |
