Guitar shops in Boston
I'll be touring New England on a family holiday next month.Well have a few days in Boston and with the current euro/dollar exchange I'll be checking out guitar shops (especially with good used instrument selections)
Any recommendations?

Haven't been to Wurlitzer's in years, don't know if it's even still there.
You should at least check out Daddy's : http://www.daddys.com/stores/stores_ma.php and of course Guitar Center : http://gc.guitarcenter.com/locations....cfm?store=550 There are a bunch in Cambridge across the river too, here's one : http://www.guitarstop.com/ Hopefully this helps, and remember don't drink the Guinness over here it is pure crap ! - Jay

+1 on Porter Square and Harvard Square in Cambridge. If you ride the subway (aka "the T") via the Red Line to Cambridge, I also recommend checking out Sandy's Music near Central Square .
Sandy's website is very out of date, but it's worth a call to see if he has anything interesting. Sandy is one of the nicest guys you'll ever met in the stringed-instrument business. To get to Sandy's, take the Red Line to Central Square and then walk along Mass Ave to Harvard Square. It's about a 1/2 mile. If you end up in front of MIT, you went in the wrong direction... I think Wurlitzer's is long gone. Daddy's Junky Music and Guitar Center both have large stores near Berklee College of Music on Mass Ave. For those you'll want to take the Green Line to Hynes Auditorium. |

boston
there's a few places out in the burbs but there are far fewer shops downtown these days.
yes to cambridge music in porter square, although a little snooty. there's a small bar next door that features a lot of original live music, funky place, check it out. no to GC, it's ya know, GC. same as every other GC. yes to Mr. Music in the Allston section of Boston, short walk from a green line trolley stop. funky place, been there forever, cool mix of crap and really nice guitars. daddy's is ok. the one you want is directly across from berklee school of music on mass ave. BTW, stay away from those kids, they might ask you to play a diminished scale or transcribe a frank zappa solo |

+ another 1 for Cambridge Music, especially if you're interested in used.
Wurlie's is a shell of it's former self, as is Daddy's, IMO. the GC on Comm. Ave. is okay, as those things go.

"Mr.Music" in Allston always had some pretty cool stuff.
It's practically across the street from Blanchard's Package Store and there's a public parking lot right behind Blanchard's. Does E.U. still exist? I haven't shopped there since Jimmy Blaisdell split. I used to work for Daddy's and that's a GREAT CREW of People. I miss all my friends there, the commute and gasoline prices...

I thought Cambridge Music turned into something else...?
Anyways - that was the place you went to find a Fiesta Red with a rosewood fretboard for a long time. They had a decent selection of old Fender Amps too.

There's a place in Littleton Mass., about half an hour outside of Boston on Rte 2A/119, called the Minor Chord. They moved from Acton Mass recently and have upgraded their stock quite a bit. No Gibsons but they do sell Fender and other electrics. The real story there is the accoustic side of the house. Very nice stuff. Also very nice people. Best way to approach it is from RTE. 495. I think it's exit 31. It's not Boston but then does it have to be?

I remembered theres also nitro-tone on mass ave in cambridge, small basement shop near harvard sq. G&L and tele/strat type stuff mostly. Not enough grease or junk in there for my tastes, but if you like pawing high end instruments check it out.
may I also recommend pinncohios pizza on winthrop st, try one of the 8 or 10 varieties of sicilain slices, delicious. and grab a beer at Grendel's den or McShays, the latter yer classic hole in the wall. |

In Woburn, Mass is Performance Music Center - off of 128. Fender Custom Shop place with a great selection of those and normal Fenders - highly recommended!
