8 year old shredding for fun

Yes ... I know ... another kid on the guitar thread

But seriously guys , if this kid is 8 , it just goes to show how easy they are picking things up these days .

Before I damaged my hands , I could play pretty quickly , but not as quick as this 8 year old , and i've been playing a lot longer than him

Yikes ... May not be musical , but learning to play music takes a lot longer than learning a tecnique , and some of us will never get as quick as this kid

Does anyone know if this is safe for young kids? Maybe it is, but part of me seems to think it might be akin to an 8 year old throwing a curveball. Some things just aren't aren't good for undeveloped muscles, tendons, ligaments etc.

I don't think speed is particularly damaging to anything , as opposed to repetitiveness .
You've certainly got to play with a light touch though , and the flurry of notes tend to become quite rhythmic , in the same way a pneumatic drill might be ( bad example but what the heck lol )

These young kids reactions are much quicker than ours these days , especially if they've been honed to do certain tasks .

It will possibly be a health issue for young ears though

Okay, this kids parents sold his soul so they could reap the benefits.... it's pretty clear

Anyone else feel the urge to give him a good whack on the head? He needs to be like every other 8 yr old guitar player and go learn smoke on the water

Yeah..Parents sold his soul to "Legba aka: YNGWIE"...seriously, if this kid ever learns to put some feeling into his music, he'll be dangerous...until then....just a novelty..

Something tells me that this is actually a 35 year old man in an 8 year old kid suit.

I would imagine that there's a lot of repetitive stress going on there as well. Doing hammer-ons at that speed with light strings (i.e. no string resistance) is akin to drumming your fingers on a table-top thousands of times a day. I'm not an expert, though. Any physical therapists out there?

As a card-carrying old fart, I have to say that the non-musicality of this style is what bugs me. The tempos are rigidly metronomic, there are no dynamics, the melodic lines are basically scale patterns, and there's no interplay with other musicians. Solo shredding is one of the most tedious things in the world to listen to, IMHO.

I'm not questioning his musical ability, its obvious he's incredibly talented,
But why is he doing that? it doesn't mean anything, its just notes, there's no soul there whatsoever.
But i never understood shredders anyway,

I think it's actually better his invested time in doing this than honing his skills on an X-box 360 or Playstation 3.

You may have something there...

I think Getbent needs to weigh in here, as he coaches youth league.

Perhaps his team shreds to warm up.

shredding?

I think if he learned to tap his foot while he was playing he'd be a more useful musician (it would definitely fix his timing).

I wish I could play that fast - then I would have the option of not doing that.

It's impressive, sure, but - even putting aside any concerns about potential physical harm, as suggested by morroben - is this the best way for children to learn music?

Young pianists study Hanon's keyboard exercises to develop musculature and coordination, but they ALSO study the literature of actual musical compositions; there's a balace there. Additionally, they generally DON'T perform Hanson for an audience, and this performance is the high gain guitar equivalent. I just hope this kid is getting a more well-rounded musical education than this clip suggests.

Yep he can play fast. But like some others have said: too many notes, not enough soul.

Same here...........not saying it ain't alot of people's cup of tea, just not mine. There's music, and then there's showing off.
But this 8-year old probably doesn't know the difference, everything at that age is"how fast can I go?"

I would love to be able to play that fast, but I certainly wouldn't play that kind of noise!

You guys are brutal! The kid is eight! Cut the kid some slack, he doesn't even know what soul is yet. I hate that kind of music too, but I would be proud if he was my son.

I'm not sure where "feeling" comes from, but when/if this kid gets there, he'll have the tools to do more with it than I ever could. I say this every time we get a kid thread here. My only hope is that he's having fun, because eight is way too young to have a job.

I dunno he doesn't look like he's having fun...I like shredding, I love Yngwie but this doesn't do anything for me. The only thing I can say is that he's really good at practicing...As far as being "only" 9 doesn't say much either. What else do 9 year olds have to do but sit with a metronome and practice?

It could be worse, he could be in a Yanni cover band.

For me the style of music is unimportant .
What is important is that something inspired him to pick up the guitar , and his tastes will embrace lots of different styles as he gets older , just like everybody else .
It's also very possible that he plays other stuff too . Afterall , it's just one clip .
What timing and feel did we have at 8 ?

I watched about 1 minute, nothing musical about that. Just playing notes fast. To me , there is a difference between playing notes and and a well played musical song ( with real emotion showing thru in the playing).

That sucked. It sounded like the kid was just running around scales without much of a melody.
