Questions on archiving musical performances

Many recordings going back as far as the 1920's are still available in updated,CD form.

I assume that there are companies out there that maintain temperature and humidity controlled vaults containing original acetates, tapes, transcriptions, etc?

Are such archival facilities owned by all the major recording companies?Or is the storage done by specialized businesses that charge a fee for keeping the recordings archived?

What part do museums and private collections play in all of this?

Whenever new performances are recorded, who decides if that performance is to be archived or not?

I am assuming that when an artist reaches a certain level of popularity that his/her recorded performances are just kept automatically for posterity???

Any informnation about archiving would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Malcolm
