How can I get iTunes onto a computer with no internet access?

I've got a PC in an area that [purposely] does not have internet access. The computer is being used for live sound and media presentations, so I'd like to get iTunes on it, so that I use my iPod with it. It's got a recent version of XP on it.

Is there a way to burn a recent version of iTunes onto a CD from my other computer (the one I'm on now) and dump it onto this other computer?

I know this must be possible, cause iPods used to come with an iTunes software CD.

As long as you have the .exe installation file, you can burn it onto a CD, or put it on a USB flash drive. I don't know if iTunes accesses the internet during installation, but I don't think it should be a big deal.

Yes you can install iTunes by copying the download to a flash drive or burning a CD and then transferring the file to your desktop on the target machine. It does attempt to contact the internet during install, but (I can't talk for the most recent revision, as I did have access when I installed/updated; but on previous editions that I have installed when not connected) you can bypass that. You will license on next connection to internet.

Issues with this type of install:
1) Your iPod can only be synched to one machine at a time. So, even if you transfer existing files / libraries to the new machine, the iPod needs to do a full removal/install/sync cycle with the new machine.

2) Songs that you bought from iTunes (or other compliant stores) have to be enabled on the new computer. This HAS to be done online. It does not take long, so you could walk into a coffee shop with internet access and use their link (or some libraries now have wireless access). If they are not enabled, they will not play or sync. Normally, when you buy a song, you have rights to installation on up to 5 machines (at a time). So, sometimes you have to de-authorize one to get the new machine authorized.

3) When you import a new CD, the song title and album info and cover art are all accessed via internet. No internet connection means you have to manually add information for each song as it is imported (if you don't just want nameless "track1" "track 2" etc. titles).

Otherwise, it will work normally when connected or not.

Have had on both PC and on Mac, seems to work well either way. But it is an application where the assumption seems to be that you will be connected most of the time you are using the application. Really, the best idea is to install and do initial stuff connected, even if that means going to a local library, coffee shop or truck stop that has internet access for a nominal fee (or free).

Cool.

Now...can you dumb it down a little for me...as far as the actual process? Where do I find the .exe file?

I'm doubting that doing a drag install would work. What you want to do is go to here:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Download the installer to your computer, move that file to a flash drive or whatever, and use that to put the installer on your non-connected computer, then run the installer.

Ah...the most elegant solution. Why didn't I think of this? (Cause I'm spending my time thinking of Yo Momma jokes?).

It was actually even easier than your suggestion. When I clicked on "download" from the iTunes site...it (of course) gives me the option to "Run" or to "Save". I selected save, and gave the burner-drive as the destiniation.

Simple.

I think the only issue would be registering it. That has to be done online, and since this computer never accesses the internet, I don't know if any problems will arise. It might even stop working after a certain number of days.

Hate to tell you this, but you should have hit "run" which would have downloaded the program, installed it and got you to the registration page all at the same time. It appears you have occasional internet access, just run the program you downloaded the next time you are connected. Then register it and set up your iTunes store enable for that computer. Then you are done. It will run with or without a connection at that point.

The computer in question never has internet access (and it's not a laptop).

I think that you've misinterpreted what I did.

I went to the iTunes site from computer A (which has internet access) and saved the iTunes download to a CD. I carried the CD to computer B (which does not have internet access) and ran the install. It did give me a warning about not being able to register, but it also allowed me to cancel the warning, and the install successfully completed.

I used iTunes on computer B last night with no issues at all.

You, sir, are correct. When you said you went to the iTunes site, I thought you meant you went to the internet site. I can't remember for sure, but I think the first download one gets from the site is not the actual program, but a program that downloads the actual iTunes program and installs it. Then sets up the "license" (kinda wierd since the program is free, but that is a different thread). I was worried that you would run the program and find that it was looking for the net to install iTunes.

But, you circumvented that process by just doing a file copy and paste. Which included the actual iTunes executable.

Am happy that you were able to get the program up and running, despite my lack of help.
