famous musician/singing dudes who don't smoke???
Hi All,
I'm trying to put them down again, yes you know what....the ciggies I'm thinking of: Bruce Springsteen, Paul Rodgers, and Bryan Adams. So much money and they just ruin your voice and health. Paul Rodgers gave it up ages ago and oh man is his voice as great as ever. I'm trying to get over the hump here, I cut my smoking in half and tried all the pills etc to fully put them down... I can feel it damaging my voice, I'm in trouble here. What other great musical dudes gave up cigs or never smoked????? How about your own story? I need some role models and inspiriation here. My man bruce nevered smoked, I wish I would've followed his personality a bit more. Thanks and keep on country rocking, freddie |

Hate to be harsh here, but my suggestion is to go visit someone who is in the advanced stages of emphysema...maybe your local hospital or retirement home. If that doesn't make you want to quit, then there may be little hope.

Someone who never smoked or drank = Ted Nugent.
I may be wrong, but I think that Bob Seager was a smoker, but gave it up. I do know that he went through a lot of throat issues several years ago.

joni mitchell's voice has been ravaged by smoking. van morrison's too. levon helm had a serious bout with throat cancer, survived, but cant sing as well as he used too. its amazing that he can sing at all and, apparently, spent a lot of time working at getting his voice back.
wow. i was a smoker/singer and often times felt that i sang better during the times i smoked. it did cause me to get hoarse after a performance. but after quitting for many years, im singing well, dont get hoarse as easily, and FEEL BETTER in general. smoking is a crazy a**, bad habit... sucking SMOKE into your lungs... thats simply crazy. imho. rand z tropicalsoul.net |

In the six years since I quit I've put the money I would have spent on cigs towards this:
1972 ES335 ![]() And this: USA FSR '72 Custom ![]() And this: Guild F50 ![]() And this: Home built all rosewood tele ![]() And a few others: 60's Classic, 50's Classic, MIJ 62 Custom RI and a 70's SF DR.... Get the idea yet....??

I smoked. I quit. I smoked. I quit. I think I'm done with it now for good.
Life is so much easier when you're not bugged by the need. And you never have to worry about having a lighter. And you can keep your car windows rolled up in the winter (unless you've been eating broccoli). And you can buy stuff (see above). By far, the best thing is the peace of mind that comes from realizing you've cut the odds of miserable disease considerably. |

I was thinking more about how Carl Wilson and Warren Zevon (and so many others) don't smoke any more.
Always makes me terribly upset. So glad I stepped on that big nail on my way to have what would have been my first cigarette as a kid. Right through my foot; boy did that ever save me.

Dave Lindley is a pretty virulent non-smoker. Hey, quit smoking and you might be able to sing just like Mr Dave!!! On second thought, that might not actually be such a great incentive ...
Last year I went to Phoenix for a week with the family; we played tourist. One day we went to their science museum, and they had this Bodies in Motion exhibit... they take actual people whose bodies were donated to science, and embalm them using some sort of polymer. You could see the various systems / musculature / nerve systems, etc. in the different models displayed. Fascinating, as Spock would say. Of course they had slices of various diseased organs, cross-section slices of obese people, and good lung vs. smoker lung (ewwww; not pretty!). At the end of the exhibit was a clear box for tossing away your ciggies; the thing was pretty darn full. I've traveled around some big towns in the US and it's evident that there are several traveling exhibits like this. Look for an unskinned body on the billboard in a large metro area with a science museum; that's the exhibit; it goes by several names. Best of luck, Freddie. Tobacco really is a good thing to quit. |

Before i was released from hospital i spent a couple of nights on the 'respiratory' ward listening to old men wheeze and gasp their last, crying for the nurse like something from a Dickens story ---- believe me, i didn't want to smoke after THAT. freddie, just do it mate, you know you can !, perhaps you can invest some money into a decent football team down there !!

You can really hear the effects of smoking on Bob Dylan's singing. Supposedly he was not smoking when he did John Wesley Hardin and Nashville Skyline (vocally IMHO his best work). Down hill voice wise since then (still love him though).

That'd be inspiration enough for anyone who knows him to quit but they don't. ![]()
