are private golf clubs really exclusive?

i have a pt job at a private golf club and late in the day, towards sunset, local teens, young 20-somethings, and cops, all not members, come at play a bit

it's never really unruly like caddyshack, yet!

i have to admit i am not one to kick them off since when i was a hs student, i loved to hit a few on the local private course

hitting a few while not a member was actually the most innocent stuff that happened, he he ;)

let's hear your golf club stories...and i promise, i won't tell :)

You sure the young'n arent caddies or other employees? It's standard for them to be allowed to play weekday twilights.

As for the cops, you may be witnessing either the fixing of, or insurance against future, tickets for members.

In high school we used to use a nearby CC for track training in the winter, they had great short hills for sprint workouts. They weren't such big fans of that so every time they would run us off we would shout "Go Cougars!" Cougars being the mascot of our arch rival school of course. I think one time they even got an irate call from the club.

Not a golf club but once in my 20's I attended a very ritzy party at one of the most exclusive clubs in DC. Out of town guests had rooms in the club and at another, even more swish, club across the street. I ended up spending the night at the second club at the behest of one of the out of town lady guests. It was a weeknight and I had to get up and leave this place' at 6AM to cab home, shower, and head in to work. I was a little embarrassed at having to put my tux back on at such an hour.

Turns out this place is so uptight that you MUST wear a coat and tie if you come in or out the front door. The doorman did not miss a beat when I rolled out of there at 6AM in my tux. "Good Morning, Sir. Will you be needing a cab?" I felt like James Bond!

the club has no guards or employees to monitor the second course which i do clean up crew for so lots of bored people like to come and hit a few

There's this golf club in Houston, Lochinvar. Swanky, nice, secluded. Membership is limited (or was in the '80's) to something like 300 members (and no women), so you never had trouble getting a tee time. The range balls there were all Titleist 1's with the club logo on them: all of them brand new. That's right--you hit a bucket of balls, they'd never been hit before, they'd never be hit again. Yearly dues were = (total yearly operating cost/number of members), payable in one lump sum, thank you very much.

That's my starting line for "exclusive".

My JV golf team was able to play some tournaments on some pretty exclusive courses. The clubs were pretty generous to local HS teams, and they allowed them to use the courses on Mondays. Over the years, I played one course a number of times, and it was quite exclusive - exclusive enough to do this:

Bob Hope was in town to do some sort of show, and being the world's most visable ambassador for golf, he went to this country club to play. He was alone, but who could turn down Bob Hope. Of course, they did turn him down. They tried to find a member in the clubhouse who would sponser him as a guest, but there was no one around - so Bob had to leave and find another place to play.

I thought of that story every time I teed it up on that course!

I thought you meant another meaning of "exclusive."

And, yes, that does happen.

-I'm a hacker/golfer and play on a Monday night league. I play at one of our local public courses. I doubt I'd ever join a private club. It's just my style. Right now I'm looking for a set of new irons. Nothing fancy, just something to replace my old Powerbilt Citation II's. So far I have my eye on Adams Tight Lies, Hogan BH-5s and a set made for me by a local semi-pro. Those would be a Snake Eyes set. As I listed hacker first, you can guess how well I play. Somehow I managed to get my handicap down to a 14, but as sure as the sun will rise, so will those numbers.

Matt D.

the golf club i work for a few days a week on late afternoons has almost no minorities and i have to admit, being a minority, i almost expect to see burning crosses

i have met a lot of racists in my life, and like has been said before, i much prefer the angry name calling racist to one of the genteel club members who treat me with respect but with reservation...i see it in their eyes and body language

the ironic thing is i have more education than these people who are the idle rich a lot of the time, or born rich, at least the ones who bug us, with many actually being decent upper middle class people, but my club i work at is not as bad as some other clubs in town, but it is always assumed i don't speak english so they don't talk to me

one club in town had some stanford and berlin eugenics types, but that is controversial, but the concentration camp leaders who did make it out of germany went to south america, and some to where i live and for some strange reason, a certain unnamed golf club attracts them having served on hitler's staff and the ss ( i did a little research on former third reich people who may have been an asset to our space program and modern medicine and northern california was a place hundreds ended up, as well as los alamos, new mexico, and that's where many hitler's former luftwaffe and ss engineers went when they came to america...it was either use them or have the soviets use them and many war crimes were swept under the carpet)

my dad, japanese american wwII vet, 6th army us engineers, often has breakfast with a former luftwaffe pilot and they share old war stories and strange stuff indeed comes out in their conversations...well i am getting off topic, but by no means are there entire third reich golf clubs :)

to make matters worse where i live, the one local eccentric who people called the "n.a.z.i." was actually a german-jewish survivor of the concentration camps but he had a thick german accent (concert promoter bill graham was beat up for being accused as the same thing when he was really german-jewish and lost family members to the blitzkrieg)

but i kind of like it that way when people think i don't speak english...i don't think i would like to spend time talking to david duke wannabe types

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, Golf Director is Butch Harmon, Tiger Woods had his lessons with BH there and got into trouble with Nike for wearing their polo shirts when he signed up on turning pro . . . . yep, a bit exclusive.

There's always going to be clubs like that but most Golf Clubs are keen to attract and keep members, the "golf bubble" has burst, in the UK, anyway.

When I joined my current club 10 years ago the waiting list was 5 years for middle handicappers, now you can expect to be in after a couple of months.

To Paul, and anybody that I offended by my post, I sincerely apologize. I thought it was about my fond memories of my grandfather's country club, but I now know I should have been a little more sensitive in how it was worded. I meant for it to point out that racial prejudices towards my grandfather are WHY he joined that country club many years ago, as no other club would have him as a member. I didn't mean to offend anybody, and I especially didn't mean for my post to be regarded as racist in nature. I was included in that list of people, after all. My post intended to bemoan the covert racism behind the scenes at many country clubs, some of which having actual war criminals as members, as expressed in 63Dot's post.

apology accepted...and i aplogize for sounding like cnn crossfire or fox hannity and colmes :)

i got into my knee jerk liberal mode, and the odd thing is that i am a moderate...he he

while this is no excuse for my attack on you, i must have listened too much to the fiery obama vs clinton debate too long and it got me all sore with reopened wounds...so sorry for my political attack rhetoric

btw...i both like hilary and obama, i just hate how they pummel each other like the wwe cage match :)

Ding, Ding, Ding

And there it is the closing bell. People you need to learn how to stay away from race issues and politics.

This post is closed. And a couple of you final posters in this mess... THINK before you type or better yet go play your guitar.
