Anyone remember when Led Zeppelin had "Do What Thou Wilt" etched into the run out groove right near the paper label on the III album?

How about James Gang's "Yer Album" when the needle gets to the very end of the runout groove, there is sound etched in there, with a voice that say's "Turn me over, turn me over, turn me over...." endlessly. On the B side, it say's "Play me again, play me again...."

On the not very much appreciated Jimi Hendrix album "Crash Landing" etched into into the vinyl near the label, it says that so and so loves somebody - I don't remember the names. On future pressings, it's no longer there.

Can you think of any other weird messages intentionally left on vinyl albums? This does not include the usual "I buried Paul", "Turn me on dead man" etc. from the PID clues. That's been covered way too much elsewhere.

I just got a nice copy of the James Gang's "Yer Album" this weekend. I'll check it out tonight. I listened to the first side yesterday but didn't listen closely to the run-out grooves (I'm not sure I can either). My turntable has the auto-return thing.

At the end of "The Who Sell Out" right after the last song "Rael", within the run-out grooves is the first few notes of the Laurel and Hardy theme (sorry, not sure what the name of that tune really is) as if played through an old phonograph.

Are you talking about odd sound bits at the runout, or visible etched notes in the runout area on the vinyl? Or both?

As for scrawlings in the blank vinyl near the label, the Eagles and especially Walsh had em on theirs. Hotel California has "V.O.L. is five piece live" (Victim of Love was cut live, no overdubs; consider that the next time you listen to that track!), and as I recall, the flip was "Never let your monster die", in reference to the mammoth partying that went with the mammoth recording time for that elpee. The final song ("Play in the Rain") on Side One of Lindsey Buckingham's "Go Insane" album has an endless groove that repeats a bar or two over and over. I had a Technics turntable without auto-return and sometimes I'd be reading while the album was playing and realize that the same few notes had been playing for ten minutes or more.

Years ago, there was a copy of Led Zeppelin IV, that had a message printed on the runout on side 2. It told the owner that they had ( I think) the millionth pressing, and if they contacted the label, there was a diamond encrusted, gold Zeppelin pin waiting for them. It took years to collect on it, as the person that bought only bought it for Stairway to Heaven, and never even listened to Side 2.

By far, my favourite is Mr Bungle's "Disco Volante" on vinyl.



It has a hidden track within the 3rd song. If you play the album through you'll never hear it, but if at the start of the 3rd track you search with the needle, you'll find a second groove in which the hidden track will play and drop out of the groove at the end of the 3rd track and continue on with the album!

On the CD, they simply couldn't do it, so the hidden track was tacked onto the end of the 3rd track.

The last cut on the first side of Def Leppard's "High and Dry" has something on the lead out, but I can't remember what they are saying. I haven't fired up my Phase Linear for a long time.

It had two sets of parallel grooves on side two so when you put the needle down again you often popped it inot the 'other' groove and got the third side, bit of a surprise if you don't know it's there.
If i remember the two sides on one both only added up to 'one' side time wise though.

I remember Styx "Paradise Theater" had a laser etching on it of the album logo.

A friend of mine has an LP that is supposed to be Chris De Burgh but side 2 is the side 2 of "The Best of Nazareth". He also has an album, I forget which one, that has bits of paper sticking out of the vinyl near the run out. Obviously just poor quality. Then he has a couple of copies of a Pat Benatar album where one LP is missing the lead guitar track on one song.

Of course there is the backward message on Pink Floyd's "The Wall".

Oh, and how could I forget the three sided double album Johnny Winter's "Second Winter"? For those that don't know, one of the albums had a completely blank side - no label or nuttin'.

The Laurel and Hardy theme was called "The Cuckoo Song" or sometimes "Dance of the Cuckoos". it was written by Marvin Hatley who was musical director at Hal Roach studios for many years. besides L&H films, Hatley's music can be heard in the "Our Gang" (Little Rascals) comedies and other Roach productions. memorable stuff.

is a 6 sided album with words etched in the runout of each side. When you put all of the words together, it says, "In space no one can hear you Clash!" Which I guess is a play on the slogan for the first "Alien" movie.

I had a 12" single that played backwards--you put the needle in the middle, and it then moved to the outside, instead of vice versa. Of course, the music sounded normal. It was for a song called "Wrong".

On the last Black Keys album [Magic Potion], there was a continuous guitar feedback note on the endgroove of side 1.

Oh yeah! Here's another fine example that I've forgotten about...

The B side of Ohio Express classic hit "Yummy Yummy Yummy" is a song titled "Zig Zag" which is a piano instrumental (w/band backing) put on the record exactly backwards. Very weird!

Wasn't there something like that on a Black Sabbath record? I think the song was called Blowin on a Jug, and it was on Sabotage?

Runout groove on NRBQ's "Grooves In Orbit" has an exagerated "hillbilly" laugh.
