Toy Caldwell...MTB

I've been a huge fan of Toy's playing since I can remember just about. I think very few folks bring such a distintive style of playing as he did. Anyway, found this out there today, from their earlier times....thought some might enjoy.

Thats how I play use my Thumb for everything.

Ive been diggin Toy since he started awesome player with tons of feel.

Saw them live @ The Roxy in LA early 70's they were great.

HOMEBOYS!!! Sad---After Tommy got killed, Toy started sinking. Good music, made by some good boys.

I saw the MTB the first time playing with Fleetwood Mac at the Santa Barbara County Bowl in about 78... talk about cool, weird guitar players that were just terrific! MTB had a keg on stage. Conceptually, genius! it was a hot day...

Was sorry George M. passed a few months ago... we play fire on the mountain and I love playing the walkdown/walkup part... our steel player pays homage George on it now... nobody knows of course... but we do.

Everytime I see Toy's name I remember reading a GP article in the 70's where he said that "jazz winds in a new direction" was his favorite album... I drove all the way into hollywood to get a copy.... Toy is really really cool.

I spent NY eve 1976 @ Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum. The bill was the Outlaws , MTB and the CDB. Southern Rock was it in Cincinnati at the time , seemed liked the ABB , Wet Willie and MTB were in town every other month. I recall be blown away by the Outlaws who encored with Green Grass and High Tides . MTB followed and it was like they were playing for family and freinds, so comfortable and in tune with the audience. What I like about them is their vibe stands seperate from all the other SR acts of the day. Very kicked back. CDB hit the stage and it was Katie bar the door. Round midnight ( obscure Charlie Parker reference) Charlie brought Toy and Hughie Tomlinson on to the stage and all hell broke loose till about 3 a.m. . A veritable improvisation clinic , tunes being called out of the blue , the coolest take on High Heeled Sneakers I've ever heard , the song sliding into 7/8 at one point.

Toy has never gotten his due IMHO as an innovator. Great tone , great feel , great player.

DK...what a great story. One on of the CDB live albums (can't recall the title right now), Charlie mentions Duane and Berry, Toy and Tommy, and Ronnie, Steve, etc and they are going to do a tune from each of those groups.

Anyway, he's playing Toy's old Les Paul. I don't know if he actually owns it now, or if it's just "on loan"...but I dig the idea that Charlie Daniels "gets" what that kinda stuff means.
