Don't know about on these MIM ones, but the original design has a GREAT subtle trem that stays in tune (when set up properly). Think of "Walk Don't Run" by the Ventures. I don't think it needed changing. We'll see how the modified design works out...

At the offset guitar forum, the purist are casting aspersions. From the specs, I think they might be pretty nice. It looks like Fender tried to modernize and improve on the design. They have a modern neck (9.5" radius and med. jumbo frets). They also fixed the buzzing problem these guitars had by moving the trem closer to the bridge to increase the string angle. And they put a tune-o-matic bridge on. I wish the price were a little cheaper. I wouldn't mind a Jag.

With all these changes, they'll probably bomb. Look at how Fender's been struggling to survive with all those American Standard Strats and Teles, which also feature bad fret sizes, fretboard curvature, the wrong pickups, etc. JM's and Jag's sell like hotcakes anyways--why change anything?

That is cool that they are making these now. I think the price is absolutely absurd though. One day I'd like to build a surf green Jazzmaster, with a small strat headstock, mini humbuckers and a hardtail.

I want one. I'm unconcerned about the changes. the changes they have made to the "Classic Player" strats and teles have been improvments, by and large, so I shall assume that the changes they made to these will be improvements.
if I want one exactly like the originals, I can get one. this is slightly different, and I think pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. now, to raise the cash. *looks around for things to sell*

For me, ya might as well just get the gaudy J. Mascis Purple Flake Jazzmaster.

I've got high hopes.
I liked these features on the Mascis sig, but wasn't really down with the purple sparkle. My biggest gripe with the AVs is the small frets. I can't wait to give one a spin.

I think Fender may be finally moving in the right direction. I also think the MIJ/CIJ vs. MIM argument is dead with rising fuel costs and great workmanship coming out of Ensenada.

I'm gonna play the MIM Jazzmaster version before I make any judgments.
As for the success of the Classic Player and Classic Baja models, how come those got blown out in and around November? Let's all try them and decide for ourselves, instead of getting blocked in to a position before the evidence is all in.

I don't even try to understand a Jag (I do know the slider switches pick the pickups in all sorts of weird combinations). But on the JM the slider switch is the rhythm/lead switch. When it is in the lead position, the guitar functions like you'd expect. The pickup selector and big volume and tone pots all work normally. When the slider is in the rhythm position, those controls do not work. Instead, the neck pickup is selected for a mellow, "rhythm," sound and the small black roller knobs are used for vol. and tone. The idea is that you preset the rhythm controls and then easily switch back and forth between good rhythm tone and lead tone.
