Watching Johnny Cash on Austin City Limits...

His second show, that is.

Uncanny how much like John Tommy Cash sounds, vocally speaking. Even in the way they phrase. What a great show, you see the love in the music.

That song w/ June "Where did we go right" is priceless. Those two singing together is an American treasure. The way in which they are so obviously and unabashedly fans of each other is heart warming. And the fact that the Carter family is there to sing with them as well is damn cool. Vince Gill always talks about family harmony singing is always better than non-related singers signing together. It's especially neat when they did the gospel number, where Johnny Cash's voice so damn low in the register that you can't help but be envious.

A funny note: when I think of Johnny Cash's music, in terms of drums, I think mostly of that snare. The drummer for this show - who's been his drummer for 23 years, I might add, has a drum set w/ 8 pieces + cymbals. Looks like some sever overkill

There are two guitar players (Soldi and Wooton, if memory serves), one w/ a hot pink/fushia EBMM Silhouette, and the other one, I am not too sure what he's playing. Looks like a boutique super strat of sorts. The guy with the EBMM had great hybrid picking technique. He used a pick between thumb and index, while he also "finger picked" with the pinky, ring finger, and - ahem - the Johnny Cash finger. Plenty of guitarists use that technique, but this guy was really a great exponent of it.

Once again, You gotta love Austin City Limits. This one I believe was shot in 1987 when John was still very much the man in black, but also was not afraid of smiling and showing us how much fun he's having on stage.

A great show.
