A Tele style, a Strat style, & a LP style Guitar. Would That Work For You?
I would like to hear your comments on, basically if that was your collection.
I'm not talking about particular brands. It could be a modified cheapie, or a high end. Would / could you be satisfied with a collection like that? Just curious. |

Not for me.
I "need" a strat and a tele. But the third is a bit tougher. I don't care for LP's at all. A PRS McCarty is a decent choice, but I really like my Hamer Artist Korina with P-90's. I guess my 3rd choice would be a semihollow - PRS HB Spruce, Hamer Artist, Hamer Newport, Hamer Monaco, or maybe an ES-339. |

I could never do with only one Tele. I gotta have one butterscotch blackguard and one white/blonde whiteguard w/rosewood board.
With these two, a Strat and a Les Paul, I guess I could do anything my limited skills allow me to do |

You've described me.
I love to record. Tone-wise, I need one of each. Start tone - Standard Strat Tele tone - Standard Tele Humbucker Tone - Gibson SG Soapbar/P-90 tone - PRS Singlecut Soapbar SE Semi Hollow tone - Thinline Tele I'm thrilled. My acoustics are the same way (sort of) Dread - Martin D-15 OM - Martin OM16GT 12 String - Martin D12X1 Slope Shoulder - Larrivee L03R 000 - Taylor 214 Travel - Martin LXM Winter Recording Gigging - Rainsong OM (Carbon Graphite) One of each.

It's always hard for me to pare it down.
Tele LP w/ Z-90's (P-90ish) Strat Hardtail strat w/ PAF's Washburn Hollowbody Squier '51 w/ Lipstick Tube, GFS Memphis Retrotron I use them all, and each has their place, though if I were going to limit myself to one guitar, it'd be the tele. Builds in the works: Lap steel, thinline tele, esquire

I have plenty of guitars i guess, but if i had to have three, i think it would be more like
Blonde Tele / RW Board Burst Strat / Maple Board Black 335 I guess that would be everything i'd really need to do, but thats just cause i don't particularly like LP's, so to each his own... i could probably live with with the blonde tele if there weren't so many guitars out there to buy...

I've got no use for a Strat anymore. The closest I come to using one is a Squier '51. The rest works for me, although I'm short a humbucker equipped guitar.
Here's what I've got in the stable. '52 Partscaster (P90 neck, Nocaster bridge) Squier Tele Custom II Epiphone Casino Squier '51 (work in progress. goin' for an Esquire type thing) |

call me crazy, or definitely out of the norm, but i get along fine in several bands with just my homemade Tele. it's designed to cover all my needs, so i don't feel the need for a collection.

How'd you know?
I'm happy with that trio. Fender Strat and Tele and an Agile 2500 LP copy w/P-90's. (Not a big fan of the humbucker)
I play the LP the least. The Fenders seem to sound the best through the amps I own. Oh, and one needs an acoustic as well. Of course. |

If I had to make three electrics cover the bases for me, it would be like this:
1)Tele (of course) 2)Danelectro Mod 7 ( I need to have a Dano, and this covers what little strat-ishness I might want) 3)Semi-hollow with humbuckers (though I haven't tried P90s, and I am growing less attached to HBs)

If'n I haaad toooo...
I could get down to just two types of guitars... 1) Tele 2) Full Hollow Arch Top. That's pretty much all I play anyway. If I had to get down to just one ...welllll.... I would have to say: Archtop...sorry tele... Tomorrow I might answer differntly.. Luckily, I'm able to keep my Humble and small but growing collection. |

Tele and Strat... yes.
The LP is the one I'm not sure about. I like them, but I think they are more amp-dependent than the others. What I mean is, they sound great through Marshall amps, but there's a big drop off when you play them through other amps. Actually, I think the SG is probably more versatile. They sound great through Vox, Fender, Marshall, etc. If you needed 3 guitars to cover all your bases, I think that's what I'd encourage. |

Ive got a Telecaster ...a Stratocaster ... A Les Paul ... And Epiphone Emperor ... I could let the Les Paul go...but Id have to replace with a dual humbucking solid body..perhaps a PRS or a Baker... But that list is just the beggining..Id have to add 6-12 string acoustics, mandolins, banjos, basses, fretted and fretless..classical ..hmm..this could be a long list....

sure, minus the strat and the les paul.
i'm by no means a monogamist when it comes to guitars, but there's a lot of other electrics i'd rather have than a strat or a les paul, including a full hollow archtop with a floating pickup (well, i got one, my epi emp regent which is as much hollowbody as i need right now), a full hollow with routed pickups (like an L5 or a gretsch) maybe a semi hollow 335 style (although i've sold every one i've ever had...we just don't bond) and maybe something quirky, like a danelectro or a jazzmaster. strats are cool, but i don't like the in between positions and i like the bridge and neck alone sounds way better on a tele. i just don't really have any use for a les paul.

I decided long ago that double cutaway guitars were for me, no matter what the brand/type. So I avoid Tele's and LPs. I tried a LP way back when and realized it didn't fit my playing style that needs to get way up the neck without getting blocked. Ok... So now you're asking, "What is this non-tele playing guy doing at a Tele forum right? Oh, amps, stomp boxes, jokes...:)

I would say if you're a session musician, those three would cover all of the bases. That said, my modified two pickup Esquire gets played the most, followed by my Squier Telesquire w/ stealth pickups (with the neck off of the one strat I had with a regular pickup configuration...). I also have a Gretsch G5120 Electromatic hollowbody and a Gibson SG Special, but me and the Gibson haven't been getting along too well lately (it might get replaced with a dual or triple humbucker Tele or Strat).

I have a Variax which is a lot of fun, particularly with Workbench allowing me to change bodies, pickups, pots, caps. etc. not to mention changing the tunings with the flick of a switch. Okay, it's not really a Ricky 12 string or a J100 I'm playing but as I said, a lot of fun.

I don't gig or compose my own songs, I just play at home and try to learn songs on my cds, mostly rock music. Those 3 guitars can cover it all. Some music recorded with a Strat doesn't sound right to if I use something else. Same with a LP type guitar. Tele's can cover a lot of different ground however.

Sure. It would not be a hardship at all.
I am pretty much there--just a few "extras". Tele style: Fender AV62RI, G&L ASAT Classic Custom Semihollow. Strat style: New American Standard. Les Paul Style: Gibson Les Paul ('60 style), Tokai Love Rock ('56 style). I could dump 2 guitars if I wanted to. But I don't. P.

For me I need a tele or 2 at least and they have to be good. I use them onstage. I construct and mod my own guitars so I get them 'just so' without spending too much, but quality-wise I'd say I get them up to nearly custom shop level.
I also have an Epiphone Les Paul that I've put Dimarzio Virtual Vintage PAF pickups in. It's a sort of backup to the teles, and gives a bit of variety too. I do like the LP sound sometimes. But I have no need for an expensive Gibson. A medium price copy like this that plays and sounds reasonably good will do fine. I like to have a strat around, but I cannot use 'em onstage. Wrong ergonomics and wrong sound/response. I just play them at home for fun, so any cheapo copy will do as long as it's able to be made nicely playable. But outside the tele/strat/LP trio I find it hard to think of a guitar I'd want. And this is topical for me right now since I have 'guitar credit' and the Boss's permission to get a guitar and I can't think of anything I'd want enough to buy. Maybe a 335 of some sort? A Thinline? Something P90ed? I dunno. I'm kind of content right now with the 2 teles, the LP and a strat. But it seems a shame to let a gear-buying opportunity slip by so I'll keep looking. |

Well, I got:
*50s Classic *modded MIM Tele Standard *80s MIJ Squier Strat *Heritage H140 Les Paul *Gibson RD Standard So that covers those bases. I am still jonesing for: *Danelectro *P90 guitar. I'd even settle for an Epi LP Jr. I figger if I am ever called on for a Rickenbacker or archtop sound for a studio thing, then I can borrow them. Damned if I will shell out that sort of $$ for guitars I would probably never gig with. And I think that really covers about all the bases tonewise.

Those three work for me. I'm about 90% Tele and a split between the LP and Strat for the other 10%. While I like other flavors (like the Dano and the LP Jr.) if I can't find what I need with the three you mentioned, I probably can't find it at all.
That doesn't mean I don't want a Gretch or a 335. A Rick 12 is also on my list, but when it comes down to the basics of guitar textures, the Tele, LP and Strat can cover just about everything.

Several teles, all with different neck pickups, 335, and a strat. No LP.
