Tele with a split'able humbucker in the neck and standard bridge pickup and an acoustic are all you need.

I have a strat, tele, and a Les Paul. I could probably live without a strat, sometimes I am just not a fan of the quack. I really like a LP humbucker sound for some things though. The only thing I have against LP's is that I just like the Fender scale better. Maybe I could ditch the LP if I got a dual humbucker tele!

Id rather have a hollow body than a LP, and I don't really need a strat because I dont play any rock n roll. I need a Fender Telecaster, a Martin Dreadnaught, a 5 string banjo, and anything else would be a toy for me to play with.

I have to be honest, Ive only been playing a couple of years and when I started, I came into a little money...Ive had a lot of different guitars, and although the thrill of trading has been fun, I think having so many different options has been more of a hinderence than anything...I am done trading and have a pretty ok stable, better than my ability requires so I try to stay on the same guitar for a few weeks at a time..my goal now is to be humble and try to play as much as I can...my partscaster strat gets the most play, but i have an American tele w/ S. Duncan mini humbucker and broadcaster p/u's that is fun to play, an early 80's chandler tele I just got from my uncle,,it has a 62 RI vibe and awesome tone..I do have a "real" Les Paul, but I really havent bonded with it, and I think I'll save it for when I'm more versed in Rock...if that ever happens....got a USA 57 RI Strat with S. Duncan Antiquity's in it and a 50's RI with some reallly chimey dimarzios in it...and its prolly gonna get traded for a smaller tube amp...I'm blessed with many experiences players in my life that have been less fortunate, so I loan a lot of my stuff out, and in return, I pick up on a lot of different playing styles and techniques....I'll be sure to let you guys know when Im on a level with Vince Gill !!! yeah right

If the gun was to my head, and I had to pick three, it would probably be:
Tele Jazzmaster Rickenbacker I wouldn't want to do that, because I love the variety... but it would work.

I happy with my Strat and Tele. My Charvel strat fulfills my humbucker jones. I prefer bolt-ons and the 25.5" scale length.
I have no desire for more guitars, but would like a Fender-style amp some day. |

Thanks for the responses! It's been fun reading your thoughts on this well - discussed topic.
For myself I think more than the 3 in the title and an acoustic would get "cluttery", if that makes any sense. In other words fussing over gear more than enjoying the playing experience. There was a time when I had several guitars and amps that filled a basement room, (drove my wife crazy) and I had all the amps covered with dust-cover plastic! What a mess the room was! Anyhow, after a move to a small place & my job loss, I went down to 1 electric and 1 acoustic. Sold my Tele & others, kept a coil-tapper Cort Strat -style. Recently I bought an Agile LP style, and am keeping my eyes open for a Tele or T-style in cherry sunburst (like the others). I have no room for more, and I only play at home, so i'm thinking it'll work out fine. |

Well, I am coming late to the party, but....
I own a Tele, a Strat (which is #1) and a Gibson ES-340 with humbuckers, and I have Gretsch on the way to fill out the sound library. But, I also have an old SG project that's gonna get P-90's and a bigsby. I like having all the variety. I like each one for it's own unique properties and I like having the variety of sounds to choose from for motivation that day... or maybe that next fifteen or twenty minutes of playing till another one catches my eye or imagination.

For one to do all?....
....at a reasonable/giggable price?
....for an actual non-collector price? ....an Epiphone Lucille is just what the good doctor would order!
