I know this is a controversial topic, but my view is simple: if record companies would stop recording and selling garbage, people might actually buy the CD's.*

*This opinion was formed after filling a garbage bag with CDs with 1 or 2 good songs on them, with 10+ stinkers.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys. They've been begging for this for some time. I hope that lawyer is a total junk yard dog and totally takes those jerks to the cleaners. Too bad the racketeering charges were thrown out.

Glad I'm on an Indie label.We work outside the mainstream of the bussiness.
Smitty's dead on.They sign sh*&ty bands and they get screwed when they don't fly.Too bad.
The business dosen't care about making stars anymore.It's a single and if you flop everynody loses and if it hits then we're all o.k.,problem is 9 out of 10 times it sucks!
I hope they all fall and we all get to choose who we want on the radio and MTV/CMT?GAC etc.

There is a huge cultural change and shift going on and the recording industry seems to think that if it just scares the public, it can stop it.

I don't believe people will buy CD's if they like the music, not when they can get it for free. Bands will have to start making money the way they did before electronic technology came along: by performing.

As a photographer, I'm faced with the fact that there's no practical way to hold on to images or protect them. I make my photography money by fulfilling contracts for commercial jobs. Trying to make a living by selling images one at a time to appreciative buyers is a laughably futile way to try to earn a living, and suing people who infringe is more trouble than it's worth.

I imagine you have some frustration there. I had an experience with a medium-sized ad agency...I recognized some images they were using, and asked if they were royalty free (I knew they weren't). The agency rep said, "We usually just use whatever we want. If we get a C&D letter, then we'll pull 'em."

Great ethics in the world these days.

As a writer I'm all for enforcing intellectual property rights.
But I think the RIAA's tactics have been appalling and wrong-headed.

Remember the early days of VHS when pre-recorded tapes were $80. There was a decent incentive to tape things. When the prices came down to $10 or so, the issue disappeared.
Part of the problem is that as CD piracy has gotten easier, prices of CDs have actually gone up.
I used to buy tons of CDs at $12 each. Now that they're pushing $20 I'm much more selective.
