Don Rich - Fiddler

Don was a heck of a fiddler.

His mugging on camera shows the fun he is having.

Per the All Music Guide, Don and Buck wrote the song.

Le Band Passepartout has a sample of a faster version.

David Grisman did a great version called Cajun Mandolin.

Like his guitar playing, Don has a beautiful clean fiddle sound. Some of the fiddle players I played with were always prone to killing the odd cat, or getting the harmony notes off at times.

Some good fiddle stuff from Don on Live in Japan, and I think at the Nuggett too (I lent that 20 some years back, and never got it back)

Does anyone have Live in Scandinavia? I guess the LP is very rare but Sundazed has reissued it:

I'm pretty sure Telemarkman has the vinyl.

Am i right in thinking that Don was a fiddle player first and then went over to guitar ?

Good tone, and nice intonation. And the fiddle tuned down a half-step, like the guitars.

What other Buck tunes did Don Rich play fiddle on?

Thats what I've always heard. Think how much better he'd have been if he'd started on guitar first!!

No idea on the studio stuff, but he does Second Fiddle on the Tokio Live album. The Buckaroo instrumental albums always had a handful of fiddle tunes too.

really interesting if anyone had enough info to work out who did what on the studio stuff. I know some of the older records are noted as Buck singing the harmony lines with himself, but no notes on the guitarists or steel.

See Rhino's "Buck Owens Collection - 1959-1990"

R2 71016

It is a great value, and the booklet has the session player details for the songs featured.

Chronological per the Rhino booklet, but Moon also did later work with Buck.

Steel-
Ralph Mooney
Jay McDonald
Tom Brumley
Jay Dee Maness
Jerry Brightman
Terry Christofferson

BTW, Check out Bill Hullett's Buck Owens Classic Thread

I got it as soon as it came out. I especially like the opening songs where the Buckaroos play "Up On Cripple Creek" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". I remember seeing them play those songs on the Buck Owens Ranch Show when I was a kid. It shows how versatile they were.

Instrumental Hits Album

I've always loved Don's take on Maiden's Prayer. Beautiful tune played beautifully.

There's Don's fiddle album too, "Don Rich, That Fiddlin' Man". I finally got my album off ebay about a year or so ago. I've seen them bring up to $40 there before.
