Well we were just discussing the Wolf and Hubert Sumlin here the other day, but that's OK. You can never say enough good things about Howlin' Wolf or Hubert!

Some folks wonder if the blues can possibly get any deeper than Muddy Waters. Howlin' Wolf is my answer.

Watching the clip alls I could think about was West Memphis and Ike Turner sneaking a young Elvis Presley in and hiding him behind the piano to watch Wolf. He got all "the moves" from Wolf noboutadoubtit!

That's from the Shindig show, in 1965.

The band is "The Shindogs", with (leader) James Burton-Telecaster, Glen D. Hardin-pno, Joey Cooper-gtr; Delaney Bramlett-b, Chuck Blackwell-dms.

The Rolling Stones are at the Master's feet. A Man amongst kids, for sure!

Be sure to watch him jumping up and down att 1:40, and his hip movements at 3:15!

Quite close to his speaking voice - but he could sing smooth, in a higher voice, when he wanted to.

The Stones refused to be on SHINDIG unless they brought on The Wolf . He is probably the greatest single Blues entertainer EVER !!!! He was a good guitar player also. Here's a clip from him toward the very end ...

I met Hubert when I was living in Austin in the 80's. Backstage at Antone's.

One of THE nicest guitarists I have ever met and humble as it gets.

Real gentleman and what an honor to hang out with him.

There is a great documentary about the life of Howlin Wolf I saw on HBO or one of them channels. Great moment where Wolf is singing a song and keeps getting interrupted by another legendary blues artist of the era and he berates him as an example of what alcohol can do to a great man.

Another segment tells about Wolf visiting his mother after enjoying success and trying to give her some money. She wouldn't accept because it was "Devil Money"

Really interesting film.

It's a great DVD, and Sumlin (who I never met) seems to be one of the sweetest people alive!

A great music documentary, if your interested in blues, or the roots of rock'n'roll!

never saw wolf, but a friend saw him at a show back in the early 70's and claimed he climbed a curtain at the side of the stage... to the top!

he must have been 60 when he did this feat.

met a woman on a train to boston back in the 70's who knew wolf. her son took her to a show and they went back stage where they were introduced... she said that he wanted her to go back to his hotel with him. she didnt, but went to see him when he was in the area and spent some time with him. apparently he had to suck on ice cubes to get hydrated as his kidneys were so bad they couldnt handle a glass of water.

wish i coulda seen him... i saw muddy a few times. once at a small club in phila where i sat right in front of him... only a few feet away! pretty cool! and pinetop was there, too!

i miss those daze. there was magic, then...

I never cease to be amazed at the absolute greatness of certain artists, especially the biggest Chess artists (Wolf, Muddy, Chuck Berry, Etta James). I have to periodically rediscover each of them - and every time I find myself smiling and saying "God, that's good music!"

Wolf was one of a kind - a true original.
