Time to say goodbye :(
Well this is my biggest dedication yet to chase my musical career...tomorrow is the day someone is set to buy my 1986 Buick Grand national...With some of the money i plan to fund my move to Nashville Tn and buy a good travleing vehicle...Its very bittersweet i hate to see this thing go...anyone else do anything of the same thing?

Good for you man. I know how hard something like this can be. I'm several years older than you (won't say how many), I have done it several times, and am about to do it again. So far, all I have to show for it is an empty wallet, a lot of disappointment, and a butt load of experience, both good and extremely bad, that I wouldn't trade for the world. I've had two record deals, one of them with a major, that NOTHING ever came from. No records were ever even released. I say this not to deter you, but to inspire you, and tell you you're doing the right thing. I was younger than you the first time I split home to "make it big".
I have a wife, kids, and a ton of responsibilities now, but I haven't quit, and as I said, am in the midst of dropping ballast, and raising money for yet another rally. If you have true talent, the only reason you won't eventually make SOMETHING of it, is if you stop trying. Don't forget it. And best of luck. -Jake

Now is the best time I always say,,, give it your best. Dont sweat the car,,, I've sold a bunch of classic 40's-50's Fords, Chevy's, and Plymouths over the years to fund everything from work ventures to paying doctor bills for my family. Things can be replaced,, a day gone by is gone. Good luck man!

You can always buy another GN. You may never get another chance in life to follow your dreams.
I REALLY REALLY wanted a Grand National untill I could afford one. Then I wanted something else. :-) |

Way wahy way back when my dad came into my bedroom one night and said
"If you really really think you want to make a living with that guitar, get up in the morning, sell your car and anything else you don't absolutely have to have to live, pack up and head to Nashville....you'll never KNOW until you try". I didn't do it....and it took me a LONG time to get over not giving it a go....good on you for chasing that sucker down. Catch it, hang on for dear life and don't EVER give up. Keep us informed here so old farts like me can live vicariously through your adventures! Good luck! |

All the best to you, my friend. Follow the music, see where it takes you. I have (and still do). No regrets.

you're making the right move! You can get another car, but the time you have in your life to take chances like that is short. You have a great head on your shoulders to be willing to do what you have to to follow your dream. And when it all works out, you can buy seven cars - one for each day of the week. And you cans tart threads here like "Maple v. Rosewood" steering wheel.

aaaaaaah.......the "Corvette Killer"...!!!
If you don't mind me asking....what was your selling price? There's two Grand Nationals at a car lot less than a mile from my house. I haven't stopped to closely inspect them yet....but one of them has $25,000 marked on the windshield in shoe-polish.

One bit of advice from a fellow young guy fighting the good fight in an entertainment town...
Be loose, be creative, be flexible, be dedicated, and don't see things in black and white. The music business is really changing, and it's the people in the trenches now who are at the absolute cutting edge, only because we have no choice... good luck!! |

Why Nashville?
I'm just curious why you picked Nashville? Of course Why not would be a perfectly good answer.
Isn't there too many people there struggling already? Too much competition I would think. I heard alot of people there play for free. I would rather be a BIG fish in a small pond than the opposite. Although I image record company exec's are probably the laziest most useless people on the planet. So if the Boss screams for a new act...all the talent scouts walk across the street to the pub to see who's playing (and sign them). I've been very casually trying to be a Big fish for 15 years. The problem is keeping a band together. At least in Nashville you'll find other dedicated hard working musicians (who are very hungry). Good luck, I wish I could join you. Just don't tell my wife

Here's my advice on moving to Nashville...
Don't follow "the rules"...follow your heart. Don't let anyone tell you "this is how it's done around here". Don't give anyone any money for anything. Don't get a girl friend (unless she's wealthy). Live as absolutely cheaply as possible. By living as cheaply as possible, I mean, find the cheapest apartment that you can, and try to find someone to split the costs with...someone that you can trust of course. Find a garage apartment behind some old couple's house or something...for a few hundred a month. As cheap as possible! Doing this frees you up to get employment that is less demanding of you....allowing you to hit the music scene as much as possible. And don't ever dismiss anyone as not having what it takes, or not having enough talent. (Unfortunately) Talent is only one part of the equation. Network and make friends with as many people as possible. Plug into the local scene and go out and watch live music on as many nights as possible...and as many genres as possible. You can skip the "Blues Jams"...and local sit-ins...unless you want to take part for the fun of it. I've found that most of them around here are lame....and a lot of them have died off in the past several years since karoke has come on so strong in the bars.
