Any YouTube clips???

If you want New Grass rather than traditional Bluegrass start with:

Alison Kraus and Union Station
Nickel Creek
Chris Thile (new album is great) with and w/o Nickel Creek
Sam Bush (kinda the founder of New Grass)
Alison Brown (great banjo player)
Tony Rice
Dave Grisman
The Kentucky Colonels
Del McCoury Band - traditional but not old guys
Brian Sutton
...and so many more...

For traditional Bluegrass: there are hundreds maybe thousands of great players and bands - start here...
Bill Monroe - the father of Bluegrass
Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt
The Stanley Brothers
Ralph Stanley - senior

I've been really getting into Del McCoury's band lately. Some of his songs have the greatest chord progressions, not your standard I/IV/V stuff. Check out "City of Stone", "Gone But Not Forgotten" and "High on a Mountain".
If you want to go back a ways, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the Circle be Unbroken" album is a classic, with lots of guest artists.

"will the circle be unbroken" the original recording, is imho, some of the best bluegrass (and a few other odds and ends) that you'll ever hear.

jimmy martin, doc watson, merle travis, earl scruggs, randy scruggs, maybelle carter, norman blake... and the dirt band.

it's a pretty outstanding album.

btw, im going to see one of the great bluegrass/flatpicking guitarist of all time, next sat., april 5.

TONY RICE

really looking forward to seeing one of the greatest guitarists in the world!

imho.

Um, I think modern bluegrass is kind of an oxymoron.

But if you mean active pickers try
Doc Watson
Norman Blake
David Grier
Jody Stecher

and my friend Wayne Henderson

Lotsa variety

I have been learning/playing BG lately myself; I use it to sharpen my picking and rhythm skills. Are you looking for groups, guitar centric, etc.?

Some of these are no brainers, but as such, can get overlooked as corny or overexposed:

Larry Sparks
Bill Monroe
Blue Sky Boys (RIP)
Flatt and Scruggs
Doc Watson

Go back further and it gets reaaaallllyyyy raw
Gid Tanner (with Riley Puckett!!)
Roscoe Holcomb

These guys mix old time/fiddle tunes/newgrass
Tim O'Brien (Red Knuckles, Hot Rise)
Norman Blake

Since bluegrass has been one of the fastest selling niche genres the past 8 or 10 years (outselling Jazz and even Blues), there are so many new “Modern Style” bluegrass bands out right now. Some of them are peaty incredible.
Here is a small list of some of the bands I know (these are the ones that I’ve done sound for this year), and links to their websites.

Cherryholmes
Cadillac Sky
The Infamous Stringdusters
Grasstowne
Randy Kohrs Band
The Grascals
The Gibson Brothers
Blue highway
Chris Stuart and Backcountry
IIIrd Time Out
Mountain Heart
Lonesome River Band
Alecia Negent
The Chapmans
and the hot band to catch this year is The Dan Tyminski Band. He’s the guitar player/singer with “Alison Krauss and Union Station” (was also in Lonesome River Band before that), but Union Station are taking the year off. So Dan has put together a Buegrass Super Band and is on tour this year. I get to work with them this coming fathers day weekend. I can’t wait!

Stefan-the only band that I could recommend that has not been mentioned is
Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder.
These guys are killer.

+1 -- I don't always see eye to eye with Mr. Skaggs, but if you want an introduction to the bluegrass genre the "Bluegrass Rules" and "Ancient Tones" CDs are a great, meticulously done by some monster players and singers. Of course Ricky is also a monster Tele picker, but that was the '80s and this is now.

Thanks for adding Wayne. One of the finest gentlemen to ever put pick to string. And builds one of the best guitars in the world.

Thanks. Wayne's an absolute mensch, and preposterously talented as both a player and builder.

Wayne's got a cool new CD called Made & Played, which is all solo picking.
Great audiophile tone and it's easy to hear just what he's playing.
There's also a tab book available.

I was the co-producer, but I've got no financial stake, just an interest in getting some good music out there.

Here are some sound samples.

The Live CD is phenomenal. He surrounds himself with really young players and they quite literally are maestros all.

Here's a new video I just found today, with a pic of Henderson #400, an OM-45 Deluxe Wayne built for himself.

If you are interested in bluegrass-jazz fusion you have:
  • Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (this is seriously knockout music)
  • Alison Brown Quartet
The album, "The Telluride Sessions", brings together some of the big players in the contemporary bluegrass mafia.

http://www.amazon.com/Telluride-Sess.../dp/B000006EJJ

and includes Jerry Douglas and Mark O'Connor who didn't get a mention yet.

If you are looking for something to do in late April that will allow you to cover a lot of ground, how about hopping across the pond to:

www.merlefest.org

if tickets are still available? If not, there's always next year. The best time to buy tickets is actually in November.

A band I have heard on the radio that sounded good was IIIrd Tyme Out (3rd Time Out).
