[quote=MandyMarie;1178626] He'd never tell them what song they were about to do...he'd just go right into it. And for anybody that's seen Chuck, he changes keys all the time - hey may do something in Bb one night and then the next night you'd do that same song in B or A. He'd blend them all together and make them medleys when he was wanting to get out of there and not cue anybody in the least hahaha - I guess you definitely had to be on your toes! QUOTE]

Yeah...a buddy of mine had the same experience backing Chuck up. He just showed up with his guitar and contracted for a Fender Twin and a band waiting for him. He just ripped into a song, and the band was expected to catch up.
I saw him once in NY (at The Ritz, I think, which is a big place) and he had The Uptown Horns with him...I was wondering how he was going to pull it off, knowing he never rehearses the band. It was pretty clear they hadn't rehearsed, but it was also pretty damn amazing...if you think it would be hard backing him up on the fly with guitar, try it with a horn section!!
Those guys are (were?) amazing!

I last saw Chuck Berry live 44 years ago at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, in 1964. He was sharing top billing with Carl Perkins, and all the way through his set there were calls from the audience along the lines of "Get off, Berry, we want Carl Perkins!" He was visibly not a happy bunny that evening...

Just by the bye, The Animals were on the undercard that night and that was the first time I heard "House Of The Rising Sun" (a.k.a. "House Of The Writhing Bums"), featuring an extended solo on the Vox Continental from Alan Price. Somewhat a case of "Go on - follow that!"

Regarding Yoko Ono, around that time or maybe a little later, before she was known for her association with Lennon, she achieved some fame (or notoriety) for producing and directing a movie consisting entirely of the bare bottoms of people walking away from the camera. Her artistic rationale for that production escapes me after all these years, as indeed it did at the time.

These days, when we're asked to do something by Chuck Berry, we've been known to say, "Sure - you chuck it, we'll bury it."
