I have one from '74 (?). "Lp special '55" I believe is it's correct designation.
One of my favorite axes. It was "steal" in the early 90's too. Here's a crappy little pic of it. It now has a pickguard. http://www.kenlasaine.com/images/gear2.JPG |

I like my Gibson SG Classic (2 P90s).
Before that, I had an Epiphone goldtop LP on hold for a day -- 2 P90s again. It was really, really nice, but I let it go.

i've got a sg with p90's and used to have a similarly loaded les paul. great tone, feel, and vibe on both instruments. i'd say find something with a neck and balance you like and you'll be damn happy. p90 guitars are brilliant and make a good aggressive partner to a tele.

Don't discount the LP faded double cuts. I know you said you like the single cut look, but these are great guitars and, used, can be had for very reasonable bucks. New, I think, you're looking at close to eight bills.

If you're willing to go for a double cut a used Hamer Special will do it. Handmade in Illinois and generally better made than most Gibsons I've played. You can still find them in the $600-$700 range.

I have a '91 LP Spc. It's one of the last of the cool ones. TV Yellow, single cut, bound fretboard, inlayed (not silkscreened) Gibson Logo, dot inlays (those mini-traps look ridiculous, don't know WHAT they were thinking there).
It's an amazing guitar. I've had it for more years than I care to count, but only just started gigging it as my number one recently. I got it a LONG time ago because it popped up, and I'd always wanted one, now all of a sudden, out of the blue, I can't stop playing it. My Daisy Rock is my couch guitar, but on the occasion that I have a gig that's not acoustic, the Special is what leaves the house 9 out of 10 times. I wasn't aware that they were terribly expensive, I figured if I ever sold mine (not planning on it) I'd get maybe six or seven hundred. Maybe I should do a little research... Jake

I bought a used LP Special Faded Double Cutaway a few weeks ago for $499 and (as I wrote on an earlier thread) it has become my favorite guitar that I've ever owned (incl. vintage Fenders, Gibsons, Gretsches...). It has a great feel, the stock P-90s sound fantastic, an all-around fantastic guitar. Finally found a used Hamer HSC that fits it. Those early '90s Hamer Specials are supposed to be great, too.

LP Special single cuts are great guitars for an alternate Gibson flavor. In my neck of the woods, used examples pop up with fair regularity for $500-700.
I used to want a doublecut until I strapped one on, then discovered I didn't like the neck/body weight distribution.

I had gas for one for a long time.I cheaped out and bought an epi l.p. junior tv yellow '57 reissue.A really nice guit for the money althought the goofy p-100 got yanked right away in favor of a manlius howlin' goat p-90.With this pickup in this particular guitar i think it's every bit as good as the gibson lp jr.i had in the late 70's.Have a look at the gibby melody maker a guy brought one in my friends shop while ago,i was really impressed with the quality of it.I want on to string up for slide.

The only thing is that he plays metal-punk-alternative on it and it hums like crazy in between songs on stage. But when the drums kick stand back because this thing flies! Very nice guitar, he paid quite a bit for it new. If I had one of these my GAS for an SG with p90s would be quashed.
