Approximate Gretsch Value??

Hey Gretsch people,

Just stumbled uponone of those once in a lifetime situations. So, I'm looking for an approximate value on a Baldwin era Gretsch Single Anniversary. I don't have an exact year yet, but I know enough to know it falls into the Baldwin years. A guy I trust says his best guess without looking at it is 68-72 or thereabouts.

It's the sunburst, single pickup (hi-lo tron) model. Lots of weather checking/playing wear. Sounds like a million bucks, and plays fantastic. No mods or anything other than a fairly ugly neck re-set job, but as I said, it plays fantastic, stays in tune, and the intonation is right on, so I really don't care about the neck joint looks.

I am not a collecter, and I plan to play this guitar, not view it as an investment. I am buying it for $300, just wondering what the current value would be (approximately) in this condition, with no case. I know it isn't a highly desrieable model, and isn't worth as much as a Gentleman or a 6120 or something, but I really have no idea what to declare it's value at for my renters insurance.

Yeah, they're kind of undervalued, I think. I almost bought a 1959 Single Anniversary much like that one for a grand, three years ago.

I'd say you're getting a GREAT price, though. Those Baldwin-era Gretsch guitars can be real keepers! I had a 1973 Country Gentleman that was a phenomenally fine guitar, bought from a pawnshop for $1200 in 2000 or so. A financial crisis forced me to sell it a few years later, darn it...

Cheers, Tim

Got the Gretsch home. Dates to November, '67. After a good cleaning (which took almost two hours) it appears the neck joint is actually really clean. What looked like goop and glue all over the place, was actually something that had been spilled on the guitar, and then covered in years of dust. Not sure, but I have a sneaking suspicion it might have been pancake syrup.

Anyhow, after going over it really carefully for a good de-crudding and shining it up, it is my finding that it is in MUCH batter shape than I first believed. It's pretty gorgeous for it's age. The only short coming I can find is that I did not notice when I picked it up, that it's missing the strap button on the tail end. The screw-in pin is still there, but the button is missing. Shouldn't be hard to find another.

For $300, I'm pretty happy with the score, and I'm super glad the folks at GC couldn't be bothered to clean it up and find out how nice it really was.

Congrats, Jake. IT is always a joyful thing to uncover a hidden beauty. And, yes, it is fun to clean up a guitar, also. (;^)

everybody knows maple syrup only goes with Guild and Santa Cruz guitars. You always top a Gretsch or a Gibson with fruit and whip cream.

Hmmmm....is it possible that this Gretsch was used in this photo shoot setting...maybe in another shot that wasn't chosen?
