Headphone mishaps... they suck... got any?

I was just normalizing some audio for a work project, when all of a sudden (while the audio was processing) the left earphone got VERY LOUD... so loud that people in an office across the hall heard it....

I yanked it off my head as quick as possible... but it was SOOOOOO loud... I hope there's no hearing loss....

I think i'm going to use my cpu speakers from now on... I'll just have to shut my door...

ever happened to you?

Never had that happen. I've had one fail, but not get louder. Sounds like a soundcard issue.

I was in my office at work listening to some clips I had recorded of my newly-finished 18 watt. I didn't have the headphone jack plugged all the way into my computer so in addition to playing through the headphones, the clips were playing through the computer speakers as well. I was about 2 minutes into the clip when I took off my headphones and heard the clip playing through the computer. These clips were not suitable for public presentation . Anyone walking past my office would have certainly heard it. Nobody said anything, so I continue to pretend nobody heard.

yeah... it was the strangest thing... I normally use Peak Pro 5 to normalize audio (because it uses the RMS levels and does a much more even job).. but I was in a hurry and just used Soundtrack pro... it was audio from a lecture...

I was testing a piezo pickup with a preamp I'd just put together with a 9V power supply. The amp was rated at 1W. I plugged in my headphones and put the left ear piece in my ear then tapped the piezo. BANG!

1 watt is a lot.

My headphones have a built in kill switch that cuts the signal as soon you take them off your head, to avoid such situations.

I had something simular happen quite a few times. Every time I crank up the volume they get loud! It hurts my ears everytime so I have to turn it down.
To be honest I lost hearing in my left ear from listening to the music too loud. It's quite bad how much hearing I've lost. I'm a little older now and I know better. I probably need a hearing aid now. Yes, I am Eric Clapton. LOL.
