Sentimental Reasons...
So despite the snow/freezing rain/rain storm that battered Maritime Canada this weekend, I began some spring cleaning today. In the music room I found my old acoustic guitar, the instrument that I really 'cut my teeth on'. I started playing guitar in high school, but it was years later and on this guitar that I really started applying myself. I finished university in 1992, and right after graduation my mother died - I moved into the family home and with no job started spending a lot of time playing this particular guitar. I figured out Robert Johnson tunes on this guitar when I became interested in blues, started exploring the CAGED system, started reading music, stared jamming with other players and really went from a casual player to, well, somewhere approaching semi-professional. This guitar has been to countless kitchen jams, open mics, on camping trips, and at the risk of sounding dramatic, for a while it was really my companion and friend, and only instrument.
Now I'm married with two kids and not a lot of free space in the house. I play out most every weekend, and have a bunch of guitars including a locally built acoustic with a neck modelled after my S6. Meanwhile the Seagull has several unrepaired cracks in the top, and hasn't even had strings on it for years. I'm thinking about taking some nice pictures of it, having them framed and getting rid of the actual guitar, but I'm hesitating. Has anyone here held on to a guitar for sentimental reasons? Anyone think that objects themselves hold value for us? Or is the guitar itself just wood, and the meaningful memories lie with us? |

My thought is that you can hang the actual guitar on the wall instead of a picture. It wouldn't take up any more room. I would hold onto it and think about everything you just told us when you look at it.

I've kept my first guitar. I've always hated the color, but I really don't want to get rid of it. Part of that may be that the price I could get for it wouldn't be a whole lot, so the sentimental part outweighs the cash value (and I really do like the neck on it). If someone wanted to offer me a lot of money for it... I'd certainly consider selling it.
