How Are You Finding New Music
The Music Buisness has been slowly killing itself over the last couple of decades. They want to blame downloading -WRONG!
(I don't want to get into a rant about what's actually killing it but feel free if you want!) There's great new artists everywhere but you'd never know. Name any "classic" act, they could put out their best work ever tomorow but you'd never know. That same "classic" act probably has better songs on their albums than you hear on the radio but you'd never know. So how are YOU finding new music? I'm using CDbaby.com, Myspace and other internet resources along with NPR stations that aren't playing the same old classic rock 400 songs. Thanks and looking forward to seeing what you have to say!

I read about new (or new to me) artists in...
-the TDPRI -Acoustic Guitar Magazine -Guitar Player Magazine -other publications If a band sounds interesting, I'll go to itunes and listen to a variety of their music. Then I buy new music.

the TDPRI, the Gear Page (especially some of the user posted soundclips), the guitar rags, and friends. It is tough sorting through the garbage.....and what I wants to know, is how come Canada, and Japan still embrace guitar driven music, and the US get's forcefed "pro tools pitch adjusted" tripe (sorry, no rant intended, just an observation.....it all sounds the same). About the only time I see/hear some new and intersting stuff is MTV U. Living in Pittsburgh, with all the colleges here, it seems college radio/MTV is more willing to play some pretty cool stuff (or some older/classic stuff that isn't the same 50 "classic rock" songs the commercial radio stations play).

On the classical music side, I attend festivals and conferences. At my university, faculty performers play stuff commissioned by living composers. In my electronic music class, non-majors bring in examples of non-popular, experimental band and rap stuff. In composition seminar, the students present music by big names in the field written in the last few news. They are adamant about presenting music written NOW, as they put it. We also invite some of these composers to campus, and the students are usually enthralled. One of the good things about being in a university.
Oh a funny story. In my electronic music class a few years ago, I had a two students (art majors) who were both in very famous bands (within that world)--I forget which. Anyway, a few weeks into the class, it was revealed who they were. Some of the other students went absolutely ape over that. They wound up all working together in the studios late at night.

FWIW, I don't even HAVE a radio in my car... for years now. P.S. Nothing against classic rock, either. Favorites notwithstanding, I can't eat In N Out burgers every day.

There is an awful lot of good, new or different music here on the TDPRI, things i have never heard of, things i would never think of listening to are all here in one thread or another.
Other than that it's 'word of mouth' but i think it always was the best way, again like others i wish i had the time to discover what i have been pointed to.

NPR!!
Also - I try to pay attention to the music credits for films with good scores when I see them in the theatre. Whether it's programmatic selections or original composed theme music. Jools Holland (sp?) is another good source.

What's cool is you "seed" your personal "radio station" with a group or a song, and pandora goes off and plays similar artists and songs. I've found some cool stuff that way. Another really neat resource is folkalley.com's streaming music - if you like folk music and similar.

I'm still relatively new to the Telecaster so I'm still discovering "new" artists like Danny Gatton and Redd V. There's plenty there for me to catch up on.

I listen to NPR for new eclectic stuff. I also keep an ear out to certain TV shows. Comedy Central has been running old episodes a Scrubs 4 times a day. It's a greet show, and often uses new (to me) music to help set mood. I just found Joseph Arthur's In the Sun this way (great tune).
I listen to most music at the computer. A few years ago, I joined Napster and use it to rediscover my musical roots. Whenever I remember a song from high school, i can find it on Napster. When I hear something on TV (like In the Sun), I can find it on Napster. It's really changed my listening habits, I'm listening to a lot more new and old music.
