Waylon's Guitar

I always wondered why there's not a whole lot of talk here about Hank Williams Jr. I had this song in my head last night on the way to my band practice. I asked our singer if he knew it, and the next thing we knew we were pumping out our own version. I was in seventh heaven!

I particularly love the line:

"You've gotta get a Finder Tellercaster and dress it in black!
Put leather all around it, so a cowboy wont scratch the back!"

Mr. Cash has got that lick America loves.
Hank's songs came direct from heaven above.
But the music I got straight from the horse's mouth.
Yeah Waylon's guitar had that sound.

I got my first lesson from him around seventy-three.
He didn't seem lonesome or on'ry to me.
He was about the nicest guy I've ever met on the road.
Yeah Waylon's guitar could carry the load.

"You've gotta take that E string Hank and turn it down"
"You've gotta have that half time beat that walks around"
Now I love Eric and Keith and theres alot of hot hands around.
But Waylon's guitar had that sound.
Yeah.

"You've gotta get a Finder Telle and dress it in black."
"Put leather all around it, so your buckel won't scratch the back"
Now I'm into Eric and Keith and theres alot of hot hands around.
But Waylons Guitar had that sound.

You know how them cowboys are.

That's a reminder that Waylon's place in music history is secure. Waylon did have that sound. I always loved Waylon's rhythm guitar playing.

"rhythm guitar playing" ??, i don't think that was the point of Hank's song and i'm not sure how many people realise how much picking Waylon actually did, most of that phased, slapping sound was Waylon but let's not forget the other half of the solo's ......

Big John, I stand corrected. Waylon was a great guitar player. Sorry to put the designation of rhythm guitar player on him. He had a unique sound and established a musical identity with it. I have the utmost respect for Waylon as a musician.

Awesome Song

That is Brent Mason playing the guitar on that song - he used a his tele and an mxr phase 90. The amp was a 67 Fender Deluxe. Hank Jr asked Brent to do Waylon's guitar on the song and Brent was honored. It was actually Waylon's band members that told Hank Jr. to call Brent to do the song. Brent admired Waylon so much and had the chance to spend a good deal of time with him over the years.
