First gig with my sons

Well, I'm just about as proud as a dad can be. On March 31st my two sons and I (along with my daughter's boyfriend who is a great Hendrix stylist) are playing our first gig together. They're all great musicians - in fact my oldest son who plays drums was offered a partial scholarship to Berkeley College of Music in Boston, MA.

It's a bar/pizza restaurant with a big stage - they've played there several times with their own bands. I can hardly wait. It's getting kind of surreal just thinking about it. We're doing a mixture of classic rock (with lots of Hendrix) and modern blues. We get a 45 minutes set, which is the perfect length of time for this sort of thing. We're all good enough that we're not even going to rehearse - just show up with a set list. Lots of fun!

Sounds like a great time. I can't wait 'til my kids are big enough to gig with. Well, my daughter anyway. My son has no interest whatsoever in music, but my little girl is already convinced she's a rockstar.

You guys are gonna have a blast.

About 11 years ago, I was practicing down in the basement, when my two sons, 15 and 13 at the time came down. The eldest grabbed my P-Bass, and the younger a set of sticks that I carry in my gigbag (you know what drummers are like...) and started to jam along, drumming on a cardboard box. I got shivers.
Now Joe, (the eldest) is my bassplayer, and John, (the younger) played fill-in drums for me for while, but is our recording engineer.
It is the best feeling to play with your kids. I often say (as a joke) that good reliable musicians are hard to find, so I had to make my own...

man, you are lucky... for me that would be a dream-come-true.

my kid grew up with music; my wife was a singer and I played guitar, we were always in groups together. Since he was a baby we took him to our live shows, rehearsals, and the studio. He never showed one bit of interest in music! We had to bribe him with candy and Goosebumps books to sit around the recording studio for a day.

When we sold everything to move overseas he was not interested in keeping any single piece of my gear (he was only 14, so I guess he didn't know better) and he didn't care.

After we moved he got the bug. All my old Fenders disappeared to his attic hideaway. He accumulated a bunch of old-school recording gear from an ex-brother-in-law. He goes up to the attic and makes fantastic recordings.

He realizes now all the great gear that he passed on!

What kills me is - he will never, ever play the guitar in front of me. He will never pick up a guitar and strum a while. I have a guitar in every room of our house, and I pick 'em up and play all the time.

But I have never seen my son play guitar. He's 21 now. He plays in his room, he records, he plays for friends - but he refuses to play for me! It would be so great to play together, but for some reason he won't do it.

the first time i gigged with my son he was 16(two years ago).we gigged after a rodeo in a beautiful country.our solo guitarist was indisposable,so i called a friend of mine(great musician)and told my son to enjoy us.he was very excited,but played some good stuff and i've seen the joy light in his eyes.then i cried also a little...
