With their outstanding work in this video maybe they all went on to become dancers!

"Turning Japanese" by The Vapors! The album that one hit comes from ("New Clear Days") is one of my favorites. You can get it with the second album ("Magnets," also very good) on a two-fer CD titled "Vaporized."

I used to get to Austin fairly regulary, decades after Tighten Up, and I'd always go to Antone's Records. (Still do, but not as often.) Anyway, in their used CD section for at least a couple of years they had a copy of Archie and Bell and the Drells Greatest Hits--and Tighten Up wasn't on it!

I really like Blues Image's "Ride Captain Ride."
and... Keith: 98.6 Marmalade: Reflections of my Life Thunderclap Newman: Something in the Air Flying Machine: Smile a Little Smile for Me Tee Set: Ma Belle Ami And who can forget Fever Tree's "San Francisco Girls." Gotta love that fuzz guitar. Oh stop it. I'm getting nostalgic.

Maybe not a "big hit," but it got a lot of MTV play back in the late 80s...
Don't Dog Me by Raging Slab Lots of slide guitar in some of their stuff.

The Sherbs aka Sherbet were massive here from about '72 through to about '78 or so with a string of top 10 and #1 hits. They were very big with teenaged girls, but actually had some good songs. They were also derogatively referred to as "Daryl Bathwater and the Fizz Tops" Someone else also mentioned Dragon. They were actually from New Zealand, but we'll claim them as our own (hell we'll even claim Russell Crowe, we have no pride). They (Dragon, not Russell) had a sting of big hits here as well, the biggest being "April Sun In Cuba" Rotelicaster mentioned Billy Thorpe. His biggest hit here was "Most People I Know Think That I'm Crazy... |

It's funny that people mention Golden Earring. They've released something like 25-30 albums and are still together and still recording with (I think) their original line-up. Maybe some of our Dutch brothers can bring us up to speed. I guess there will always be bands that are massive in our own countries but unheard of overseas. Down here *no-one* has heard of Journey, believe it or not. You guys missed out on Cold Chisel.

Wow. Nice list. I just read all the pages and I don't think anyone mentioned what I consider the quintessential one hit wonder; MacArthur Park by Richard Harris. It hit again in the Disco era, Donna Summer, I believe, but the Harris version is epic.
There are so many good ones already listed, but I also like Dean Friedman's Ariel, Johnny Bristol's Hang on in There Baby and Hurricane Smith's Oh Babe, What Would You Say? |
