My 16 year old is starting to run rings around me

He's been playing and taking lessons for about a year. I think he is just one of those players who really gets it. Plus, he practices about 4 hours a day.

I'm a proud poppa right now. I was jamming with him last night and was just
blown away.

Assuming that you're paying for his guitar lessons you now need to get him to teach you what he's been learning. Don't let him get off with just being good for heaven's sake.

IT's really cool that he's putting the time in and making himself great at it; it's something you don't see that often at any age anymore.

Thats great. 16 is the perfect age to learn. 4 hours a day practice doesnt hurt either.

Neil Schon was in Santanas band at 16 was even in the Black Magic Woman video.

The cool thing is that if he started playing because of you, he'll always look up to your playing.

"I want to thank my dad for this Grammy. He's the best guitar player in the world!"

Congratulations!

I can't wait for my son to get better than me. Most things have come pretty easy for him (smarter than me) so he hasn't been too disciplined to try yet. He's a month away from having an amp in his bedroom, which would probably encourage him to play more.

Cool. 16 is the age I started playing at, 11 years ago this past February. Finally I had a second activity that I could spend hours alone in my room doing.

Rhino-you got it all wrong. He will walk up to the microphone and say:" I want to thank my producers and engineers. I want to thank radio. Of course I want to thank the fans. I want to thank God for the music. And most importantly I want to thank the one person, without whom I would never be able to play the way I do. THANKS MOM!!!!

My 15 yr old is getting really good on bass, he set in on a jam we had and hung right in, even on stuff he'd never played before. Too bad we all don't live near each other then we could get'em together in a band and retire off them... I'm sure they wouldn't be hurting for equipment...lol.

I got my son (now 13) started a couple of years ago but now he picks up stuff by himself, as he's at "that" age where he and I could easily get into an argument when I'm teaching him something. I also teach a few beginners and realise how little I had to do to get him to a good standard. The good thing is he plays a wide range of music at school - rock, folk, gypsy swing, jazz, which has also improved his playing no end.

Whether he will admit it or not, your son is just as proud of you as you are of him. Sounds like you son has a great dad.

Of all the shame and horror, my son chose to learn... drums!

My revenge is that my grandson also now has a small kit of his own!

Must be a lot of that going around. My 13 year old (14 in May) has been taking lessons for almost two years and he can play rings around me.

He loves playing lead, which I don't play at all, but I can still out play him in the rythm department.

He is always trying to teach me lead, and I just keep telling him, "You play the lead, I'll fill in behind you."

We have a blast, which is one of the great things about sharing the same interests.

And he just got his first tele style guitar, an SX. Now he is buggin me for a Fender.

I told him he'd have to save up for it, I've already gotten him 6 guitars.

I play rings around my whole family! It would help if any of them played an instrument, but hey, makes my job easier!
