hahahah
When I had my second motorcycle accident in 1990 since I live by myself I didnt have anyone to take care of me so I went to a rest home. I was 39 and everyone else was 70-90. One day a friend was pushing me down the hall in my wheelchair and a really funny older woman said "Wonderful day for a BM isnt it" hahah we laughed so hard snot bubbles came out. Still to this day we can laugh about that one.

Being a few weeks from 51 makes me think about some things that I would/could have done differently in my younger days, but that is water under the bridge.
Getting older has mostly good days but it is up to everyone to make the decision to have a good day regardless of what happens. A few more aches and pains, bifocals, some hearing loss and something else we eat now gives us gas but what the heck, life is one big adventure, may as well make the most of it. Mark, you're too much...hahaha.

Funny reading this thread about 40-somethings feeling old just after I got done shoveling about 6 yards of 3/4" crushed rock to fix some erosion problems.
I will be 63 next month and feel better than ever. Being retired may have something to do with that of course And an occasional sip of single malt just evens it all out But do I feel "old"? Nope. Only in the eyes of some of the store clerks that wait on me. |

Can you even imagine what it would feel like to get back into your 18 year old body for a day?!

My 18 year old body was freshly "draft age", although I didn't go in the service until some years later. I seem to recall aches and pains during basic training when in my 20's - but as they'd tell us -- pain was just a sign of weakness leaving the body.

I'm still carrying more weight than I want... but even so, I just got home from catching 12 year old pitchers (squatting the whole time no bucket) for 2 hours... I'm tired and I'll be sore tomorrow... but, I'm pretty happy that I can still catch and throw for that long. Yep. if the plumbing is working right.. the rest takes care... the sex stuff was mostly about stress reduction and the positive effects emotionally... lots of of good stuff for your...... BRAIN! go figure!

A lot is programmed in your genes, and the rest is up to you.
I had to stop training at 45 because of health problems, and could never get back in shape after that. Back then, I was feeling and looking 10 years younger than I was. Now... I feel 10 years older than I am. That's life...

I've read that we start losing muscle mass in our thirties, and the loss starts to accelerate in the late 40s/early 50s.
So it's probably a good idea to do some regular exercise to keep the muscles from melting away! Cheers, Tim

I'm 62, have had 7 MI's, heart surgury, 6 stints and a host of other problems.
I have always been exceptionly physically fit and would likely be gone if not. Genetics come into play and usually decide what your health status will be as you age. I play out regularly and stay extremely grateful that I can. My friends and bandmates help carry equipment and mother hen me so I don't over do. Life is good even as a weakling.

I turned 41 a couple of weeks ago. I guess I've been lucky because despite a pack-a-day smoking habit and a fondness for alcohol, people still tell me I look much younger. I'm 186 cm for 78-80 kg (that's about 6'1" for 12.5 st) and my blood pressure is good (about 125/85 and 70bpm heart beat at rest).
I do eat relatively healthily (and in moderate amounts, which is probably just as important) and get some exercise (i.e. I don't own a car, I swim a medley 1000m once or twice a week and play my guitar standing up about 5 hours per week). I also have a healthy sex life with my partner. Having said that, I am increasingly aware of the little aches and pains that come with age - that has to be accepted. There are advantages with age too: wisdom, mellowness, experience. And, at risk of sounding sexist, I'm pretty happy to be a mature male. With age our faces acquire character, which I think is cool.

Sheeze. That was bad furrfurr.
At 50 I am a badass. Well, except for the motorcycle knee, the L4/L5 thing, the ankle that is barely ever a problem, and since I quit smoking a few months ago I've discovered I can sleep for freakin' days. I used to could never sleep in, because I wanted to get up and have a cigarette. Now, I swear to God. I could sleep for 24 hours if I didn't have to get up to pee. I lift weights, hunt my woods, work a 40 hour week, gig every weekend, eat eggs, meat, and real (shredded Idaho spuds) hash browns for breakfast, juice my own concoctions, have been drug free for over 8 years. My sight is getting weird, my L4/L5 back gives me a pain from time to time, but somehow my ears still work when there is no allergy problems, and that is weird because I've been gigging FOREVER, and owned a 100 watt Marshall half stack and played rock for many years. (search DOUBLE AUGHT @ cdbaby.com) I can hear a pin drop better than my wife, and she's never gigged a day in her life. She was sitting in FRONT of me....................... Hee, hee....... Murph. |

I have mentioned in other posts that I am at school with a bunch of kids. If their youthful attitudes don't keep me young, three years of studying stage combat with them sure will. It's the wolf pack mentality. You never ever admit that you can't keep up. I guess now I've convinced myself that I'm still young. One charming young thing even said to me "I can't believe you're 46--you act so...so...immature!!"

I look at ageing this way: the older the guitar (and amp) the sweeter the tune.

Rhino -
Interesting post! As most who have replied, I am waaaaaaay past your age. My experience is as follows: 1. Try like crazy to keep your weight in check. When I quit smoking, I gained 30 lbs and have carried it for 20 years. I can't shake it - yet. 2. Do everything possible to keep the blood pressure in check. 3. Don't ever start to think your age. I.e., as a 60 year-old, I still think of myself as much younger - it may be delusional, but I still enjoy going to concerts even if I'm the oldest guy there (although, you're always safe at a Dick Dale gig). 4. Enjoy your maturity! At some point, you'll catch yourself thinking that you have the answer to things - that you really DO understand life. And the truth is - you really do! All that learning is on the verge of turning into wisdom - enjoy it! As the old saying goes - We all have to grow old, but we don't necessarily have to grow up! Dean

The reality of getting older never hit me until I couldn't ignore any longer that I needed glasses to read. I'm only in my forties, but I knew that I didn't read nearly as much as when I was younger and I didn't want to admit it was because of my eyesight. But, I got the glasses, which I only wear when I read and feel better about it now. I can't even look at myself in the mirror though when I wear them - too scary - I look like my dad.
