buidling a glaser style bender yourself?
Hello!
Anyone in here ever tried to make a glaser style bender? i have a p/g and have had a p/w many years ago. this time i want a glaser/mcvay bender.. a g-bender only.. the problem is, in norway (where i live), there are noone that builds glaser style benders. and it will be a problem to send a guitar to guys in the u.s that makes them. so my only way out is to make one myself. if anyone has any tips for me, i would very much appreciate it! Erikr,
Firstly, I'm not a builder, but a player. However I do have a Glaser b bender in my #1 and it *looks* to me like you'd have to have some pretty specialized equipment to accurately drill the neccessary holes and install one (even if you had the internal parts and the saddle to place in the bridge). As I said, I don't do any of the "tech work" on my guitar, so I could be completely wrong, here. Hopefully, someone with some experience in bender installation will "jump in" and will be able to correct me if I'm wrong. |

Erikr!
Don't give up yet.. :-) ..you'd be amazed at what is possible if you persevere with things..It's not my particular interest so I can't give you specific details, but I'm sure someone will respond with some helpful information...just be patient.. Good luck with it all...regards from Oz

hey erikr,
I self-installed a shelton bender design in one of my teles, which i pretty much had to make from scratch from the raw parts and a few badly drawn plans. Nothing is impossible, it would be really worth finding out what it would involve. even if you were to alter the design slightly (as i heard the horizontal through-body drilling is meant to be next to impossible) check out forrest lee jr, he made a b-bender himself for a few dollars with basic parts from diy shops. it can be done, when i get older and have a bit more time/money I might give it a go myself. good luck! |

I'm not certain about the details of a Glaser style bender but I've built my own Parsons/White benders. Unfortunately, in order to machine some of parts you need access to and training on the use of machine tools such as a metal lathe and a milling machine.
I'd like to know more about Forrest Lee's setup. I thought I read somewhere that he used parts from a car transmission. |

Why don't you buy a body in the US, have the Glaser bender mounted and then have it shipped to norway?
I'm sure Bill Bores can provide the body and do a professional job, the shipping is cheap, Bill sent me to italy a p/w body. You can put the neck and pu's and the rest in Norway... |

I bought a Squier from Forrest Lee Jr. with the same "home made" B-bender of his Frankentele, it's a nice to have around, my kids can relic it without any problems :-), but I always end up playing the other Tele with the smooth and artwork P/W b-bender installed by Bill..
I wish I had the time to experiment the building but I'm sure it would take more than a couple of guitars before having a nice results.. good luck! |

+1 on needing drawings for any b bender. I'm pretty good with metal and fine tolerance measurement and a buddy has a lathe and milling machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forrest did actually use some old transmission parts in his b-bender (don't ask me which parts, i'm not much of a car guy). Check out his myspace page. You can contact him via the page (yes, he does check it periodically).
