Keith tuners

Alright, so I understand the set-place for re-tunes, but please set me straight on the purpose of both E's...
I have considered installing some on my Tele-bender, but it will require drilling out the head-stock and that just freaks me out! Is this something I should want to do?
Some examples of the achieved effect would be really helpful.
Thanks folks!

I found that the high "e" tuner was not necessary for what I do. But the low is great, especially for those low twangs. I keep the high stop at "E" and the low stop generally at "B". With a little practice, you can hit many of the notes in between.
Some folks don't tune the low stop, so there is no limit to how low one can twang....
Kind of a Juniour Brown sort of thing...

i'm w/ smokey, skip the lil' E. i had it and never used it so i took it off. i only use the Upper stop on my big E, set to E, and i can take it all the way down, and come back up and somewhat accurately stop on E. Ala Junior Brown, and Big Smokey (great minds think alike).

I have them on both E's -

Honestly, I never use them. I don't play in altered tunings...and if I play "Nashville West" I do my own twist on it in standard tuning rather than try to clone one of Clarence's versions.

Keith peg's

I use em' both.
I drop the high one for slide from time to time, and you can get some kooky things while goin' up or down while using the bender.

I use 'em both too...like Shuggie said...the high E-D drop works for some slide...you have a little open G on the top four strings...also works for those Stonesy I-IV things...or a kind of folksy add9 to a straight C chord...or a B7 on top of an F chord shape...for bluesy stuff...think "Little Red Rooster"

The low E-D drop works for a quick dropped D..I used to play with a bass player who wrote her own songs alot...shuffles in D...andI used the drop D alot

I read some where some players set their high E for an E-F# raise...Im not sure how that would work...

Clarence had his on the fifth string for a while...for A-G drop or A-B raise I presume...

Hey Don

Funny you mention the peg on the A thang.
Just order'd another set,the spacing might get weird, but I'll take my chances.
From what I've heard and pic's I've seen,he seem's to have started out with it on the A originally, then switched to the low E.

I guess I need to play around with this stuff before really considering the tuner swap.

Any good ideas on a fledgling attempt at this E to B tuning to play around with? Sorry for my obvious ignorance here, I've always been a standard-tune kinda guy!

Some low string E ideas:

Tune your guitar at the high stop to E.
Then drop the string to B and tune it to the low stop.

If the song is a standard I-IV-V in E, you drop the tuner down to b and give it the old third fret pull-off during the V parts...

If you are starting a run in E on the low string. Silently drop the string to B, twang the note and very quickly bend the note up to the E and start your twanging run... Best to do the tuner bend a beat before your run...

This stuff will be very hard to do without the Keith Tuning Peg. I think that Junior does without, but he is a monster..

1st string and 5th string drop

That's how mine is set up. E to D and A to G. This lets me do some banjo type licks and since we play in G more than D I can drop the A string down for a nice accent. Back when I had my hipshot double bend I had the drop D key on it also. I'm thinking of trying sperzels new drop key on the Low E.
BTW, I'm glad to see this part of the forum. I'm still trying to raise the scratch to get a real bender put in my Tele. I'd really like some feed back on the different types.
I don't want to loose my vintage bridge and brass saddles.

there are set screws...

...2 of them...loosen a set screw...tune the peg ...tighten that set screw and repeat the procedure for the other set screw. Once they are set and tightened...turning the peg from stop to stop gets you where you want to go...

Anyone have a pic or website for Kieth tuners? Never heard of these either. Man, there's a lot of interesting info on this forum!

Keith Tuners

I've thought about getting Keith tuners http://zeppmusic.com/keith.htm for a long time but have never decided which strings I would use them on. Stewmac sells a Schaller version which are less than half the price or Keiths but I don't know if the quality is as good.

Ive had schaller "Keiths" on my tele for about 10 years...only problem Ive had with them was related to "operator error"...the Scallers were an exact fit for a 3/8" peg hole...fit both a stew mac and a fender (Am Std)neck perfectly..took about 3 minutes to put them on...
