Hey Don,
The pickups are "Kent Armstrong" They sound pretty decent but as soon as I get the guitar back I'm switching the bridge pup to an alnico II, And I'm adding a "Lindy Fralin real 54" Strat pickup in the middle position W/ a bleed volume pot. (ala Brent mason) setup. I'm gonna leave the neck pickup as I like the tone of that one. "Real warm sounding" This is my 3rd Bender guitar I've owned but my first double bender setup. My gig Saturday night will be interesting & fun!! DW

How the heck does a double bender work?

I'm guessing you can't bend either strings, but instead it bends both? Both full step bends?

Do you play that in standard tuning?

Sorry, I'm just a dumb kid starting to get my feet wet with country playing and bender madness :(

There's that leather lanyard in the pictures that attaches to your belt, and the heel of the guitar. You pull the guitar away from you to raise the G. B bender works like you'd assume.

If I understand correctly the b bender is set for a whole step, and the G for a 1/2 step..gets the I-IV change..like the A-B pedals on a pedal steel..or is the G a whole step to do the archtypical oblique sus2-3 pedal steel bend??

The G bender looks like an entirely entirely different gizmo than the B..the throw, the mechanics, the way things are tied together etc...Ive concluded that I can do all the G bends I need with my fingers....but then Im playing the west coast cosmic cowboy stuff and not the Paisley-Olander Nashville stuff...which is a rather different style

That looks cool, man...

I have a question for you... I'm also very curious as to what the G string pull is used for. It would seem that you could do practically any kind of double bend by bending the G with your finger in combination with the B string pull. I used to play pedal steel, and most double bends on the steel could be aproximated on guitar this way.

Has anyone ever put (or heard of putting) a second string pull on the high E? Then you could do "Together Again" type licks. Or is that what the G pull is for: licks where you would bend the high E with your finger combined with the G pull?

Marty Stuart put an E bender on "Clarence", the guitar he bought from Clarence's widow..its a plunger thing along side the bridge and Im not exactly sure what it does..raise -lower-full-half step?

He has it on at least one other guitar, and some of the Stringpull Guitar shop replicas of Clarence Whites guitar have the e bender as well.

Rob Jackson has an E bender guitar and does some nice stuff with it. He posts here.

Don, are you talking about the banjo tuner on the low E? I believe Clarence White had one on the A (which would drop the string a full tone) and that Marty Stuart moved it to the low E instead. That would be used to change the tuning of the guitar very quickly, but not used as a "bend" effect. I could be wrong...

nope..Marty has a plunger style bender on the high E string. I believe theres a picture of one on the Nashville West Guitar on p2 of the "show your bender" thread..

Clarence did have Keith tuners on his high E and A strings. Marty moved the one on the A to the low E string.....which to me is a more practical place for it...I assume on the A it gave an open G on the top 5 strings

In at least one live version of Chesnut Mare there is a point where Clarence used the tuners for "on the fly" bends

Thanks for the info, Don...

Clarence White had such a unique sound...I've been trying to learn anything I can about how he did it. It's very difficult stuff for me to figure out for some reason...especially without a b bender.

Its usually not hard to figure out the notes in a Clarence lick...where the hard part comes is figuring out the way he played them..the timing and syncopation is really the tricky part for me anyway...for Clarence licks without a bender look at the Nashville West CD, his stuff on Sweetheart of the Rodeo and Younger than Yesterday..theres tab for "Time Between" at the old Clarence White forum...which I think can be accessed by the archives at the new site

Anyway we've really took this thread about Doc's new bender guitar off into left field..Doc I assume youre gonna put an Anico II humbucker in the bridge?..Im still curious how that will sound with the double benders....post some sound bites when you get a chance...

Hey Doc

I was talking with Bill last week, and he sent me links to your installation. He's very proud of the work, and rightfully so. Awesome guitar, and it looks like a great installation. Happy birthday to you!

Rich

Hi Guys,
Yes, Bill does great work. And a super nice guy to deal with. I would recommend him to everyone. Also, Don, as far as the pickups, That's correct, I'm putting the Alnico II in the bridge position. Although The Alnico I'm installing is a single coil. And the Lindy fralin strat pickup in the middle position , It should give me the nice fat sound I'm after. I 've always had pretty good luck w/ the Alnico setup. Thanks for the nice comments guys!! Doc
