Patty Loveless B-Bender
Just put together a CD with three versions of Richard Thompson's "Keep Your Distance"; RT, Patty Loveless and Buddy and Julie Miller. There's a very tasty bender part on PL's version. Does anyone know who played on it? I know Albert Lee is on "Timber". but this playing is not like any other Albert I've heard.

Great tune..sort of lived it at one point...
RT does some great faux steel stuff on his version...hes clearly using a strat ot strat style guitar.....I think I like his version better that Patty Loveless's...Ive not heard Buddy Miller's take on it...but it seems that many RT tunes are tough to cover...his lyrical phrasing is so unique that anyone else sounds like they are trying to cover Richard Thompson and not quite hitting it... |

Really? That's what I thought at first, but then I found an article in which PL describes the "twisty" guitar intro and says it's a pedal steel. I couldn't any discography which listed Albert on that album; only the earlier "Honky Tonk Angel". Where did you source Albert?
In any event it's a great "twisty" lick. |

RT really is difficult to cover; he and Jerry Donahue playing together are terrific non-linear players. The Miller version is from 2006. It's on an album with "Rachel" about Rachel Scott from Columbine. It's a sad anthem. I got to play the song for Rachel's brother a few years ago; he had never heard it. |
