I love Vince Gill ... mostly - naw I really hate him .. well maybe not
Had the pleasure of hearing Vince Gill the other night. He is a great tele/pedal steel emulator, along with all the other ****** he gets to do incredibly well. But no b-bender for that guy. He bends two strings at a time in perfect sync and makes you just want to cry. IT's not fair ... it's not fair ... it's not fair!

Matt Rae is the other guy that plays that way. They both astound me. But what Vince has going is that incredible voice - some people get kicked out of the womb with everything - he is one of the very few.

Vinnie and Albert are the guys I learned to play from.
I got into Albert from the Emmylou Harris - Luxury Liner record. The funny thing is Vince had to Learn all of Alberts licks when he joined Emmylou Harris' band (replacing Albert when he left for the Clapton gigs) and Vince didnt have a bender... so... he developed that style without the aide of a bender... and I didnt have one either, so I was doing the same thing Vinnie did, and he became me hero (The Way Back Home record)... If you search you tube for Vince Gill... check out "ridin the rodeo" it's the best non bender... bender solo I've ever heard. |

I'm a big Vince Gill fan, too. He obviously loves what he does, and seems to be very genuine, a nice guy who likes making music with all kinds of people. He shows up everywhere, like on the Marty Stuart Show and Country Reunion, and you can tell the other performers involved are truly fond of him. And what a voice!

Hey Forest, Luxury Liner is an amazing album, its almost shocking to consider how many amazing musicians played in the Hot Band, Emmylou Harris definitely knows how to pick them.
I kind of did a similar thing, i was learning to play Albert's licks without a B Bender, but for me it was because i still hadnt even discovered b-benders, hours upon hours of practice later i found out you could get a piece of gear to do it for you, but i always stuck to playing steel licks without a bender then anyway

Yea for some guys when it rains it pours in the talent section (of course they all work very hard too!), especially it seems within the Bluegrass/Country field. Apparently Bryan Sutton plays fiddle very well in addition to guitar. (probably mandolin too!) I would love to hear him bust it out sometime. Ricky, Johnny Staats, Sam Bush, Tim O'Brien all guys who have mastered several instruments. Best thing to do i guess is just enjoy what they're bringing to the table!

I caught one of his Austin City Limits performances late one night randomly switching channels. Man, my jaw hit the floor. They were doing an extended jam at the end of the song and that was one of the best things I had ever heard...

vince and robben are up at the top of the heap, in my book.
very different styles, but killer guitarists. vince can sing like a bird, too. and, after seeing him in april, i know why he was country music entertainer of the year for multiple years. he REALLY puts on a funny, friendly, warm... tight and entertaining show. basically, HE LOVES HIS AUDIENCE. i have yet to see robben ford, but i will, soon. rand z |

Not even Mark O'Connor did that. He's basically won every guitar contest he's entered in the last two years, playing so well that a number of vets crashed and burned trying to keep up. He's 18 years old. Nice guy too. |
