Sho-Bud made nice steels, some are real classics. Single decks start out with the Maverick, a student level 3 pedals and 1 knee lever. I am not sure if the one you are looking at is a Maverick but I just thought I would mention that they made a student model.
Personally I would try to find more than just a student model as you will quickly want more than 1 knee lever. Try the "Steel Guitar Forum" or it might be called the "Steel Guitar Pages" website. Like this place it is full of alot of nice folks with a ton on knowledge. Good luck. I kind of want to get another steel myself, I was stupid and sold mine a few years ago. |

I owned a Sho-Bud Maverick with two knee levers. It was enough for me to learn on, then sit in with, then get gigs with. Then I sold it and got a Sho-Bud Pro I 12 string. Many years later, it was stolen and I ended up getting a 12 string Sierra. Go to Steel Guitar Forum.

Post a pic, and I probably can tell ya what you want to know. I have 4 Shobuds. '59 Perm, '63 Fingertip, '67 S-10 rack and barrels, ''74 S-10 3 &6. I'm sick! Plus, I'm in contact with many others with my disease.

OP, post a pick of the underside mechanicals please. Although a student guitar, you can certainly make some beautiful music on this guitar. But, sooner or later, you're gonna wanna step up. Most Mavs are pretty much a fixed copedant, and knee levers can't be added. But, it's a ShoBud, and things changed constantly there. Your guitar has a wood wrap-around changer. Some of the best sounding Buds have that changer, even though it's pretty primitive. I would say that your guitar, due to the middle position of the pedals, was made between late '67 and '70. It's nice that you got one from before they went to the bodies covered with contact paper.
Flip that sucker over, and post a pic. Then I might be able to tell you more. Another thing to look for when it's upside down, is, how many wires are coming from the pickup? I bought a '74 guitar that didn't have the coil-tapped pickup. Or so I thought. When I flipped her, I found one of the pup wires was just taped up! You might be able to add a coil tap. I did. |

here she is under the skirt
![]() btw there is definitely only two wires off the pup so i am gonna have to work out some way of grounding it... i thought of just shorting the return back to a copper strap screwed to the cabinet and wired to one of the string pull mounts. trouble is which is the hot red or black. i would guess red is hot

That looks identical to one I had in '77 and sold later in '78 in SF bay area except mine had two knee levers. One of the levers lowered the lower E string, the other lever raised the G# strings. I recall it had excellent tone. You can add one more lever if you want to but it's enough with one lever to get to know if you're going to like pedal steel or not. I got to where I was gigging with mine, then bought a single 12.
If you decide to stay with steel, you WILL want to get a different one. The Maverick will only have one tunable change on each string. Most pro models will have three tunable raises and at least two tunable lowers if not three. I assume you know that it's supposed to be tuned E9th as in Buddy Emmons setup except for the knee levers. Black should be ground but check to be sure the wire goes to the ground lug of the jack. |
