It is . . .
. . . a device that the player can use to bend the B string a whole step in a smooth rise (like you would bend a note a whole step with your fingers, as opposed to raising the note via a hammer-on or sliding up two frets with your left hand).
The methods of actuating the device vary, but the most common are to have the device connected to the shoulder strap (Glaser, Parsons, etc.), or a lever pressed by the hand (Palm Pedal) or a lever pressed by the hip (Hip Shot). The "bender" concept has also been applied to raising the G string and some players favor "double benders" to raise both the B and G strings mechanically. There is much more, but I'm stoppin' here!
